Summary

CumminseBay logo, Inc. (CumminseBay logo) is recalling certain PowerDrive EV part numbers 4000EV, 6000EV, and 7000EV electric drivetrains. The drivetrain may experience an electromagnetic noise on the Control Area Network (CAN) bus, which can cause a loss of electrical power to the power steering pump.

 

Remedy

Dealers will replace the High Voltage Low Power Inverter Harness, and install an overlay harness, free of charge. Owners were notified of the safety risk on May 22, 2021. A second letter will be sent once the remedy is available. Owners may contact CumminseBay logo customer service at 1-800-286-6467.

Description

This Safety Campaign is being issued to resolve intermittent communication issues with the Power Steering, Air Compressor and Thermal Management Systems on certain BES CM0904 EV104B products. This authorizes the replacement and upfit of several harnesses and HV AC cable.

Note : If a vehicle already has an updated part, that part does not need to be replaced. Replace ONLY the parts needing an upfit.

 

Action

In order to qualify for repair under this field action, a drivetrain system:

  1. will be covered Regardless of coverage status, and
  2. must show as OPEN on QuickServe® Online for this field action.

  1. Check Low Voltage Jumper Harness for Air Compressor Inverter. Replace if not labeled 5678412.
  2. Check Low Voltage Jumper Harness for Power Steering Inverter. Replace if not labeled 5678412.
  3. Check High Voltage AC Cable 200175 for Power Steering Inverter. Replace if not built by COBO.
  4. Check for TMS Harness 5678413 or TMS Overlay Harness 5678734. If neither are installed or labeled then upfit 5678734.
  5. File one claim for one or more SSNs updated at the same time.

Dear CumminseBay logo OEM Customer:

 

We are writing to inform you that CumminseBay logo Inc. has determined that a safety-related defect exists in certain PowerDrive EV Electric Drivetrains that were manufactured between June 1, 2018 and February 23, 2021.  CumminseBay logo has initiated a recall of the subject systems.  Our records indicate that some of these systems have been shipped to you.

 

A copy of CumminseBay logo’ initial Part 573 Defect Notification report is enclosed.  This notification was submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on April 20, 2021.  As more fully described in the Defect Notification, the Electric Drivetrain system may cause a loss of electrically assisted power steering.  If this occurs, it may increase the risk of a crash.

 

Enclosed is a list of the affected systems that our records indicate were shipped to your plants.  For systems installed in vehicles that have left your control, we encourage you to make a safety defect determination in accordance with 49 USC 30118 et seq. and, as appropriate, to submit a Defect Notification to NHTSA in accordance with 49 CFR Part 573.  CumminseBay logo will conduct the recall, including notifying owners pursuant to 49 CFR Part 577, performing the remedy, and submitting quarterly status reports to NHTSA. CumminseBay logo is requesting that you provide the associated vehicle model identification, VINs and owner contact information to facilitate owner notification.  Please work with your CumminseBay logo account team leader to ensure that the requested information is provided to CumminseBay logo as soon as possible.

 

For systems/vehicles that are still in your inventory, please contact  on  to arrange for repairs, as necessary.  Please note that Federal law prohibits delivery of these systems, or vehicles equipped with these systems, under a sale or lease until this condition has been remedied.

 

CumminseBay logo will conduct a safety campaign to address this condition.  CumminseBay logo is developing the remedy plan and will communicate it as soon as it is available.

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.  CumminseBay logo Inc. has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain CumminseBay logo PowerDrive™ electric drivetrain systems that were manufactured between June 1, 2018 and February 23, 2021.

This notice applies to the PowerDrive electric drivetrain systems in your vehicle listed on the enclosed table.

You previously received a letter informing you of this recall and informing you that CumminseBay logo was developing a remedy. A remedy is now available for your vehicle.

 

WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?

The subject electric drivetrain systems may experience a condition that results in the loss of electrically assisted power steeringPower steering functionality is restored after a key switch recycle.

In the event of loss of power steering assist, manual steering functionality is retained but would require increased steering effort, particularly at lower speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.

 

WHAT ARE WE DOING ABOUT THE PROBLEM? 

CumminseBay logo has released field Safety Campaign #C2451 “BES CM0904 EV104B Communication Harness Safety Campaign” to correct this condition by updating the wire harnesses for accessory inverters and providing improved electrical shielding.  This campaign is currently available at CumminseBay logo Distributors and authorized Warranty Dealers. The repair will be completed free of charge and most applications will require approximately 1 hour to complete.

 

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?

Contact the nearest CumminseBay logo Distributor or authorized Warranty Dealer to arrange to have this campaign performed on your drivetrain system.  The distributor or dealer will work with you to schedule the best date to complete this repair.
