Failure Mode May Cause Over Steer
The inverters may apply unequal torque after a failure mode is detected, causing over steer and increasing the risk of a crash.

Summary
Arcimoto Inc (Arcimoto) is recalling certain 2019-2021 FUV, 2020 Deliverator, 2020-2021 Roadster, and 2021 Rapid Responder motorcycles. The Steering Angle Sensor (SAS) may have been incorrectly calibrated, causing the SAS to fail to or incorrectly detect a fault.
Remedy
A service technician will update the firmware and replace the idler arm, free of charge. Arcimoto does not intend to send any dealer or distributor notifications, as it has neither dealers nor distributors at this time. Owner notification letters were mailed May 27, 2021. Owners may contact Arcimoto customer service at 1-541-683-6293.

3 BACKGROUND
Since early January 2021 there have been multiple reports of unintended lateral motion; it was discovered that manufacturing was consistently building out of tolerance idler arms, and that there was no set tolerance for the set screw on the print. This combined with manufacturing’s lack of tools to correctly calibrate the steering angle sensor (SAS) to “zero” and the risk of the SAS having a fault, not detecting a fault, or incorrectly detecting a fault can make the vehicle more difficult to steer and control, increasing the likelihood of a crash.
4 OWNER NOTIFICATION
Owners of affected vehicles will be sent a notification of this campaign.
5 CORRECTIVE ACTION
Arcimoto began ECO-402 to poka-yoke the production of its idler arms, to provide additional tolerances, to add inspection dimensions, to address out-of-tolerance weldments and to release a single set of symmetric parameters for all vehicles, to uniformly define the steering profile. Additionally, Engineering developed and validated explicit direction to Service exactly how to remedy the recalled vehicles.

8 SERVICE PROCEDURE
8.1 RECORD incoming state of recalled vehicle. We would like to collect data to understand exactly how many Arcimoto vehicles are affected by exactly which Failure Modes. This will assist not only troubleshooting and remedy efforts, and continuous improvement efforts, but also recall reporting obligations.
Is the 0 01412 Steering Angle Sensor (SAS) plugged in?
- If NO, plug in the SAS, then proceed to step 8.2.
- If YES, proceed to step 8.2
8.2 When steering is centered to track straight, is the set screw in the front hole of the 003011 Idler Arm ?
Record whether the set screw is in the front hole, then proceed to Step 8.3.
8.3 RECORD incoming state of recalled vehicle. Connect the vehicle to the SmartView GUI by connecting a computer to the left-side inverter via:
- 000242 USB-to-RS232 Service Programming Adapter, and
- 001950 Serial Null Modem Cable Assy
The steering profile is set to three different mV values: “Fully Turn Left,” “Straight,” and “Fully Turn Right. ”
Open the “Steering Map” tab under Configuration > Traction > Dual Traction
Record the displayed three mV values.
Proceed to Step 8.4.
8.4 Remove and replace 003011 (Idler Arm). Follow Engineering’s specific assembly directions on drawing 0 03005 (Lower Steering Mechanism Assy), properly using Loctite.
Complete installation.
Proceed to Step 8.5.
8.5 Check SAS Connector Insulator. Check the yellow insulator of the 3-pin SAS connector. The insulator should be fully seated and not pinched between the sensor and connector (see images below).
8.6 Program the Inverter. Ensure the vehicle is still connected to the SmartView GUI running on a computer .
- Navigate to the “ Manage” option on the SmartView home screen
- Load “L eft.clon ” file onto the inverter using the “ Clone Load” option
Proceed to Step 8.7.
8.7 Confirm Inverter Programming. Navigate to the “ Steering Map” tab under Configuration > Traction > Dual Traction.
a. Confirm the “Fully Turn Left” value is 4000 mV.
b. Confirm the “Straight ” value is 2500 mV.
c. Confirm the “Fully Turn Right ” value is 1000 mV.
d. Refer to Step 8.8 for correctly configured values and mapping curve.
- If these values are not correct, then re-attempt loading the new clone file
- If still not correct after 3 re-loading attempts, then contact Engineering
If Steering Map values match as shown, then proceed to Step 8.8.
8.8 Calibrate SAS System. Loosen SAS housing and attempt to calibrate the system to 2500 mV when Straight = 0% turning angle.
Can 0%±1% be achieved? If YES, proceed to Step 8.9.
If NO, loosen SAS housing screws and rotate housing until output reads 0%±1% with steering centered to track Straight = 0% turning angle.
If multiple attempts fail, then pause the procedure and contact Engineering.
8.9 Apply Torque Seal to SAS Fasteners. Apply Torque Seal to:
- Inside the head of the M4-0.70 Shaft Set Screw: Torque Seal must completely cover all tool access.
- Inside the heads of the M5-0.80 Housing Screws: Torque Seal must completely cover all tool access.
This provides tamper evidence, and expedites visual inspection by technicians in the future.
Proceed to Step 8.10.
8.10 Check new “Wiper Fault Check” limits. Ensure the vehicle is still connected to the SmartView GUI running on a computer.
a. Select the “Configuration” tab.
b. Confirm the “M in Level Check” threshold is 5 00 mV.
c. Confirm the “M ax Level Check” threshold is 4 500 mV.
d. If these values are not correct, then re-attempt loading the new clone file as per Step 8.6.
e. If still not correct after 3 re-loading attempts, then contact Engineering.
Remedy is complete.

Why is your vehicle being recalled?
It is possible that the idler arm and / or steering sensor calibration on your vehicle is out of tolerance. This can make the vehicle more difficult to steer and control, increasing the likelihood of a crash.
What will we do?
Owners will be notified by mail and instructed to contact Arcimoto to schedule a service appointment to have their idler arm replaced and to have their firmware upgraded. There will be no charge to vehicle owners for this service.
