Summary
Daimler Trucks North America, LLC (DTNA) is recalling certain 2021-2022 Freightliner 114SD, 122SD, Business Class M2, Cascadia, 108SD, Western Star 4900, 4700, 5700, Custom Chass RV Chassis, Custom Chass S2 Chassis, Custom Chass XC Chassis, Custom Chass XB Chassis, and Custom Chass MT Chassis. The tie rod clamps may be loose, which could result in loose tie rod ends that could break or detach.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the tie rod clamp bolts and nuts, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed December 23, 2021. Owners may contact DTNA customer service at 1-800-547-0712. DTNA’s number for this recall is FL-888.

General Information
Daimler Trucks North America LLC, on behalf of its DETROITTM Powertrain Division, is initiating Recall Campaign D21R7 to replace the tie rod assembly on some model 2, 3 and 5 front steer axles built between December 15, 2020 and April 14, 2021.
Replacement parts from your facing Parts Distribution Center may now be ordered. Refer to “Table 1” for the applicable part or kit number. If our records show that your dealership has ordered any vehicle(s) involved in campaign D21R7, a list of the customers and vehicle identification numbers will be available on DTNAConnect. Please refer to this list when ordering parts for this campaign.
There are approximately 10,095 units affected by Recall Campaign – D21R7.
Travel Time and Mileage
Due to the complexity of this safety-related repair and the tools required, this recall campaign does not qualify for travel time and mileage reimbursement. The repairs for this campaign need to be completed at an Authorized DTNA Service Facility.
Work Instructions
Please refer to the attached work instructions. Prior to performing the recall campaign, check the vehicle for a completion sticker (Form WAR260).
Tie Rod Assembly Replacement
1. Remove the bumper for both Cascadia models. For instructions, refer to Group 31 of the applicable workshop manual.
2. Remove the cotter pin from the tie rod end at both sides of the vehicle.
3. Remove the tie rod end castle nut at both sides of the vehicle.
4. Using a Tiger Tool tie rod end remover, or a similar, remove the tie rod end from the tie rod arm at the driver’s side of the vehicle.
5. Using a Tiger Tool tie rod end remover, or a similar, remove the tie rod end from the tie rod arm at the passenger side of the vehicle.
6. Remove the old tie rod assembly from under the vehicle.
7. Remove the castle nut and plastic protective cover from both ends of the new tie rod assembly.
8. At one side of the vehicle, install the tie rod end into the spindle. Install a new castle nut and hand tighten
the nut.
9. Adjust the tie rod until the other end of it can be installed into the spindle at the other end of the vehicle.
Install the other tie rod end into the spindle. Install a new castle nut and hand tighten the nut.
10. Tighten the castle nuts 163 to 230 N·m (120 to 170 lb·ft). If the cotter pin hole in the tie rod end stud is not aligned with any of the castle nut slots, further turn the castle nut a maximum of one-sixth of a turn to align it.
11. Install a new cotter pin in the tie rod end stud and castle nut. Ensure the tangs are bent properly.
12. Perform a full truck alignment. For instructions, refer to Group 33 of the applicable workshop manual.
IMPORTANT: If the vehicle is equipped with an APS3 steering gear, it must be calibrated when an axle alignment is performed. See Section 46.09.105, Active Power Steering (APS) Calibration of the applicable workshop manual for procedures.
13. Install the bumper. For instructions, refer to Group 31 of the applicable workshop manual.
14. Test Drive unit in order to calibrate the Electronic Stability Control System(ESC).

supplied lock nuts being over-crimped. This can cause thread galling of the bolt and nut during
installation. When galling occurs, it is possible that assembly torque may be achieved but the clamp is
still loose.
Describe the safety risk: The tie rod clamp being loose could lead to the threaded tie rod ends becoming
loose and eventual steering loss if the rod end pulls out of the tie rod, or the tube is broken due to
vibration of the loose joint.

Late December, 2020, despite a lack of warranty claims and any other indications of failures on customer
vehicles, DTNA’s axle assembly plant in Mexico reported a tie rod clamp nut quality concern and
promptly began a containment effort. January, 2021, DTNA discussed with the tie rod supplier the
concerns, and the supplier established what it believed to be a “clean” date for tie rods assembled with
properly crimped clamp nuts. No information suggested that the problem extended further, and all
indications were that no defective parts escaped the production plant. February 2021, DTNA’s axle
assembly plant in Detroit reported finding similarly suspect parts and promptly began containment.
March 2021, DTNA resumed discussions with the supplier on this issue to understand scope of issue.
Early May 2021, DTNA received DFMEA from the supplier suggesting a potential safety concern. May
2021, even though DTNA is not aware of any field failures related to this concern nor has any
information to suggest the existence of a defect with an unreasonable risk to the safety of any vehicles in
the field, DTNA decided to conduct a voluntary safety recall.
Identify the Remedy
Describe the defect/noncompliance remedy program, including the manufacture’s plan for

Daimler Trucks North America LLC, on behalf of its DETROITTM Powertrain Division, has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists on certain DETROITTM Model 2, 3 and 5 steer axles manufactured between Dec 15, 2020 through Apr 14, 2021. DTNA is initiating Recall Campaign D21R7 to replace the tie rod assemblies.
The tie rod clamp may be loose due to the supplied lock nuts being over-crimped. This can cause thread galling of the bolt and nut during installation. When galling occurs, it is possible that assembly torque may be achieved but the clamp is still loose. The tie rod clamp being loose could lead to the threaded tie rod ends becoming loose and eventual steering loss if the rod end pulls out of the tie rod, or the tube is broken due to vibration of the loose joint, creating the risk of crash.
Records indicate that your vehicle has one of the affected steering axles.
Please contact an Authorized DTNA Repair Facility and arrange to have the recall campaign performed. The labor time required to perform this replacement is 2.0 – 4.3 hours. To locate an authorized facility, search online at https://demanddetroit.com/find-a-dealer. This service will be completed for you at no additional cost by a DTNA repair facility under the provisions of this notice. You may be liable for any progressive damage that results from your failure to complete the Recall within a reasonable time after receiving notification.
If you no longer own the vehicle that corresponds to the identification number(s) please return the notification to the Warranty Campaigns Department with any information you can furnish that will assist us in locating the present owner. If you have leased this vehicle, Federal law requires that you forward this notice to the lessee within 10 days. If you are a subsequent stage manufacturer, Federal law requires that you forward this notice to your distributors and retail outlets within five working days.
You must make an appointment with the repair facility, at least two weeks in advance of the actual repair, so the repair facility can stock the replacement part(s) needed to complete this recall campaign. Failure to provide advance notification to the repair facility may result in a delayed repair.
If you have paid to have this recall condition corrected prior to this notice, you may be eligible to receive reimbursement. Requests for reimbursement may include parts and labor. Reimbursement may be limited to the amount the repair would have cost if completed by an Authorized DTNA Repair Facility.

IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL This notice applies to your vehicle(s) Subject: DETROITTM Tie Rod End Clamp Bolts This notice is sent to you in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. This is to inform you that your vehicle may contain a defect that could affect the safety of a person. Daimler Trucks North America LLC, on behalf of its DETROITTM Powertrain Division, has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists on certain DETROITTM Model 2, 3 and 5 steer axles manufactured between Dec 15, 2020 through Apr 14, 2021. DTNA is initiating Recall Campaign D21R7 to replace the tie rod assemblies. On certain DETROITTM Model 2, 3 and 5 steer axles, the tie rod clamp may be loose due to the supplied lock nuts being over- crimped. This can cause thread galling of the bolt and nut during installation. When galling occurs, it is possible that assembly torque may be achieved but the clamp is still loose. The tie rod clamp being loose could lead to the threaded tie rod ends becoming loose and eventual steering loss if the rod end pulls out of the tie rod, or the tube is broken due to vibration of the loose joint creating the risk of a crash.This is the first of two notices you will receive regarding this subject. This letter is to inform you of an upcoming Recall to correct the issue noted above. Daimler Trucks is currently securing replacement parts. There is no action for you to take at this time. The second notice will inform you when the final remedy is available. When you receive the second notice, please contact your authorized Daimler Trucks North America dealer to schedule the Recall for your vehicle. If you do not own the vehicle that corresponds to the identification number(s) which appears on the Recall Notification, please return the notification to the Warranty Campaigns Department with any information you can furnish that will assist us in locating the present owner. SUBJECT: DDC D21R7 – Revised Bulletin
This letter is to inform you that a revised bulletin for DETROITTM Recall Campaign D21R7, Tie
Rod Clamp (Lock nut) Over-Crimped is available on DTNAConnect. Please print and use the
revised bulletin for all work under D21R7 from this point forward.
REVISION 1: D21R7 Work Instructions are being modified by removing the Tie Rod Inspection
and Mileage Check as well as removing the Clamp – Locknut Replacement. Going forward it will
only be necessary to proceed with the Tie Rod Assembly Replacement instructions.
REVISION 2: As a result of Revision 1,Table 1 has been adjusted accordingly. Tables 2 and 3
have been modified with updated SRTs and labor times that include test drive and account for the
repairing outlets that may not have an alignment rack and need to sublet out this portion of the
repair.
REVISION 3: Step 12 of the Corrective Procedure has been modified with a specific reminder in
order to perform the alignment properly. This was already part of the workshop manual alignment
instructions.
REVISION 4: Step 14 of the Corrective Procedure was added for test drive after bumper install to
calibrate the Electronic Stability Control system.

Daimler Trucks North America has notified its dealers and customers in the U.S. and Canada of a safety related defect that exists in certain chassis manufactured by Freightliner Custom Chassis Corporation and delivered to your company. A remedy without charge is now available, and owners may take their vehicle to a Daimler Trucks-authorized service facility to have the recall performed. The recall bulletin, owner notification letters, and a list of potentially affected vehicles delivered to you are attached for your information.
Your company may have an obligation to notify its dealers, distributors, and customers of this recall under Title 49 Code of Federal Regulations Part 577.13 and/or Motor Vehicle Safety Act Section 10(1). General Information
Daimler Trucks North America LLC, on behalf of its DETROITTM Powertrain Division, is initiating Recall Campaign
D21R7 to replace the tie rod assembly on some model 2, 3 and 5 front steer axles built between December 15, 2020
and April 14, 2021.
Replacement parts from your facing Parts Distribution Center may now be ordered. Refer to “Table 1” for the
applicable part or kit number. If our records show that your dealership has ordered any vehicle(s) involved in
campaign D21R7, a list of the customers and vehicle identification numbers will be available on DTNAConnect.
Please refer to this list when ordering parts for this campaign.
There are approximately 10,095 units affected by Recall Campaign – D21R7.
Travel Time and Mileage
Due to the complexity of this safety-related repair and the tools required, this recall campaign does not qualify for
travel time and mileage reimbursement. The repairs for this campaign need to be completed at an Authorized DTNA
Service Facility.
Work Instructions
Please refer to the attached work instructions. Prior to performing the recall campaign, check the vehicle for a
completion sticker (Form WAR260).

Records indicate that your vehicle has one of the affected steering axles.
Please contact an Authorized DTNA Repair Facility and arrange to have the recall campaign performed. The
labor time required to perform this replacement is 2.5 – 2.6 hours. To locate an authorized facility, search online
at https://demanddetroit.com/find-a-dealer. This service will be completed for you at no additional cost by a DTNA
repair facility under the provisions of this notice. You may be liable for any progressive damage that results from
your failure to complete the Recall within a reasonable time after receiving notification.
If you no longer own the vehicle that corresponds to the identification number(s) please return the notification to
the Warranty Campaigns Department with any information you can furnish that will assist us in locating the
present owner. If you have leased this vehicle, Federal law requires that you forward this notice to the lessee
within 10 days. If you are a subsequent stage manufacturer, Federal law requires that you forward this notice to
your distributors and retail outlets within five working days.
You must make an appointment with the repair facility, at least two weeks in advance of the actual repair,
so the repair facility can stock the replacement part(s) needed to complete this recall campaign. Failure
to provide advance notification to the repair facility may result in a delayed repair.
If you have paid to have this recall condition corrected prior to this notice, you may be eligible to receive
reimbursement. Requests for reimbursement may include parts and labor. Reimbursement may be limited to the
amount the repair would have cost if completed by an Authorized DTNA Repair Facility.
The following documentation must be presented to your dealer for consideration for reimbursement. Please
provide original or clear copies of all receipts, invoices, and repair orders that show:

Work Instructions
Subject: Tie Rod Clamp (Lock Nut) Over-Crimped

Corrective Procedure
Tie Rod Assembly Replacement
1. Remove the bumper for both Cascadia models. For instructions, refer to Group 31 of the applicable
workshop manual.
2. Remove the cotter pin from the tie rod end at both sides of the vehicle.
3. Remove the tie rod end castle nut at both sides of the vehicle.
4. Using a Tiger Tool tie rod end remover, or a similar, remove the tie rod end from the tie rod arm at the
driver’s side of the vehicle.
5. Using a Tiger Tool tie rod end remover, or a similar, remove the tie rod end from the tie rod arm at the
passenger side of the vehicle.
6. Remove the old tie rod assembly from under the vehicle.
7. Remove the castle nut and plastic protective cover from both ends of the new tie rod assembly.
8. At one side of the vehicle, install the tie rod end into the spindle. Install a new castle nut and hand tighten
the nut.
9. Adjust the tie rod until the other end of it can be installed into the spindle at the other end of the vehicle.
Install the other tie rod end into the spindle. Install a new castle nut and hand tighten the nut.
10. Tighten the castle nuts 163 to 230 N·m (120 to 170 lb·ft). If the cotter pin hole in the tie rod end stud is not
aligned with any of the castle nut slots, further turn the castle nut a maximum of one-sixth of a turn to align it.
11. Install a new cotter pin in the tie rod end stud and castle nut. Ensure the tangs are bent properly.
12. Perform a full truck alignment. For instructions, refer to Group 33 of the applicable workshop manual.
IMPORTANT: If the vehicle is equipped with an APS3 steering gear, it must be calibrated when an axle
alignment is performed. See Section 46.09.105, Active Power Steering (APS) Calibration of the applicable
workshop manual for procedures.
13. Install the bumper. For instructions, refer to Group 31 of the applicable workshop manual.
14. Test Drive unit in order to calibrate the Electronic Stability Control System(ESC).
15. See Completion Stickers for final step to certify work.
