Propane Regulator May Fail and Cause Fire
Increased propane pressure can enlarge the flames in gas appliances, increasing the risk of a fire.

Heartland
Recreational Vehicles, LLC. (Heartland
) is recalling certain 2018-2021 Mallard, Shadow Cruiser, Sundance XLTTT, Wilderness, Prowler, Trail Runner, 2018-2019 Pioneer, Terry Classic, 2020-2021 Lithium, and 2021 North Trail trailers equipped with a Winntec model 6020 two-stage propane regulator. The regulator may fail, causing an increase in propane pressure.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the regulator and test the propane system for leaks, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed August 3, 2021. Owners may contact Heartland
customer service at 1-877-262-8032.

21v428 Winntec Regulator Inspection/Replacement
T.C. 2021-364
- Locate LP tanks at front of unit and remove cover to access regulator.
- Locate date stamp on left front of regulator. If stamped N 20 xx this will be inspect only and picture will need to be provided of date stamp. If stamped N 17 xx, N 18 xx or N 19 xx the regulator will need to be replaced.
- To replace regulator, make sure LP bottles are turned off by turning knobs clockwise and disconnect pig tail from LP bottles.
- Remove regulator from threaded rod.

- Once regulator is removed, using a ¾” wrench remove the brass fitting at the bottom of the old regulator that the LP line connects to and install on the new regulator with new pipe compound or thread tape. DO NOT USE PIPE COMPOUND OR THREAD TAPE ON FLARED FITTINGS
- Reinstall regulator on threaded rod and reconnect pig tails.
- Once replacement is complete a drop pressure test will need performed.
- REGULATOR MUST BE RETURNED!! PLEASE USE BOX THAT NEW REGULATOR WAS SHIPPED IN.

Inspection of the Winntec Model #6020 LP Regulator
1. Locate LP tanks at front of unit and remove cover to access regulator.
2. Locate the LP regulator between the LP Tanks. Only the Winntec Model #6020 – Dual Stage Double Cylinder – Automatic Changeover Regulator is affected.
3. Locate the manufacturing date code stamp on left front of regulator.
4. If the manufacturing date code stamped into the regulator is N 17 XX, inspect the propane system to insure there are no visual or functional issues. If the manufacturing date code stamped into the regulator is N18 XX, N 19 XX or N 20 XX replace the regulator per the instructions below.
5. To replace regulator, make sure LP bottles are turned off by turning knobs clockwise and disconnect pig tail from LP bottles.
6. Remove regulator from threaded rod.
7. Remove the pigtails from the regulator.
8. Remove regulator from the Main LP line.
9. Once regulator is removed, using a 3/4’” wrench remove the brass fitting at the bottom of the old regulator that the LP line connects to and install on the new regulator with new pipe compound or thread tape. DO NOT USE PIPE COMPOUND OR THREAD TAPE ON FLARED FITTINGS!
10. Reinstall regulator on threaded rod and reconnect pig tails.
11. Once replacement is complete a drop pressure test will need performed.
12. Proceed with a Drop Pressure Test:
a. Insert manometer into LP system.
b. Turn on both LP tanks.
c. Turn off both LP tanks.
d. Bleed system down to 8” water column.
e. System must hold 8” water column for a minimum of 3 minutes.
13. Ensure system operating pressure is at 11” (+-0.5) water column with 50% load and lockout pressure does not exceed 14” water column.
11/4/20–Grand Design RV
informs THOR Ind. of three incidents involving Winntec Model 6020 regulators, where the regulators were suspected as the cause of fires. The Thor companies reviewed the issue internally and found no issues with these regulators at that time.
12/4/20–KZ RV informs THOR Ind. of two issues under investigation with the same suspect regulators.
12/22/20–Grand Design performs lab analysis on two failed regulators and finds they contain an oily substance inside. There is a belief that the oily substance is machining oil from a manufacturing process.
2/24/21–Grand Design informs THOR Ind. they are investigating several more fires, and will be sending regulators from those incidents for lab inspection.
3/16/21–Lab analysis performed on six regulators from Grand Design, including one exemplar and one from KZ RV. In the lab setting, the KZ RV regulator operated within allowable parameters, although it contained the same oily residue seen on the field samples.
4/19/21–THOR Ind. engages Exponent Engineering to conduct analysis of regulators to determine source of oily substance.
5/12/21–Exponent provides written report/presentation on regulator analysis.
5/14/21–Meeting held with Grand Design, Dehco, Winnspec International
, and Chen Fong to discuss regulator issue. Winnspec given until May 18, to return information regarding issues with their regulators.
5/21/21–THOR Ind. Discussed regulator issue with the Medium Heavy Duty ODI office.
5/24/21 & 5/25/21 – Meeting with Grand Design, Dehco, Winnspec International
, and Chen Fong at Livonia, MI testing facility, to discuss regulator investigation. Chen Fong agrees the regulator is allowing higher pressure than expected with a compromised second stage seal.
5/27/21–UFP determines that it supplied parts to Heartland
and disclosed this information to Thor Ind.
6/2/21 – Heartland
conducts safety committee meeting and decides to move forward with a recall for safety.

2019 Terry Classic travel trailers. We apologize for any inconvenience this action may cause you, however your safety and continued
satisfaction are of the utmost importance to us.
The vehicles subject to this recall were built with a model 6020 propane regulator manufactured by Winntec
that may have a faulty secondary rubber seal. This malfunction may result in propane pressures that exceed
the propane appliances design limits and/or may be venting propane to the atmosphere which could result in
a fire that results in property damage, personal injury or death.
The remedy is to replace the regulator and pigtails. The repair should take approximately 35 minutes to
complete. This repair will be done at no cost to you.
At your earliest convenience, Please contact your local dealer to set up an appointment to have this
inspected and if needed corrected immediately, this service will be performed free of charge.
