Summary
Comoto Holding, Inc. (Comoto) is recalling certain Bilt motorcycle helmets, models Amped Evo Adult, part number BLH126, in sizes MD, XL, 2XL, Amped Evo Rapid Adult, part number BLH142, in sizes MD, LG, 2XL, 3XL, and Amped Evo Youth, part number BLH127, in sizes SY, LY, and XLY. The helmet may not adequately protect the wearer in the event of a head impact during a crash. As such, these helmets fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 218, “Motorcycle Helmets.”
Remedy
Comoto will replace the helmet with a compliant BILT model helmet, free of charge, or provide credit to replace the helmet. Owner notification letters were mailed April 18, 2022. Owners may contact Comoto customer service at 1-800-292-5343.

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the National Traffic Safety and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Comoto Holdings, Inc., has decided that certain BILT and Street & Steel motorcycle helmets fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 218, “Motorcycle helmets.”
Your safety is our biggest concern, and we always strive to ensure that the products we sell exceed the applicable safety standards. We are writing to you today regarding an important product recall issue relating to a small range of helmets sold by us. This recall is being conducted according to rules and procedures of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (“NHTSA”) and the U.S. Department of Transportation (“DOT”). The NHTSA Safety Recall numbers are 22E-012 and 22E-013. Please read this communication carefully as it informs you as to what you should do in connection with the recalled helmets.
WHAT IS THE DEFECT/NONCOMPLIANCE?
Our third-party testing company determined that some of the helmets did not comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Standards. The helmets may not provide adequate impact protection in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury. For that reason, we are recalling the following helmets:
- BILT Amped Evo Adult Helmet — Sizes M, XL, 2XL
- BILT Amped Evo Rapid Adult Helmet — Sizes M, L, 2XL, 3XL
- BILT Amped Evo Youth Helmet — Sizes SY, LY, XLY
- Street & Steel Raider Helmet — XS, M, L, 2XL
If you have one of the helmets listed above, then you should stop using that helmet immediately. Also, you should be aware that it is a violation of federal law for you to sell any helmet covered by this recall notice.
WHAT IS CYCLE GEAR / REVZILLA / J&P CYCLES GOING TO DO?
We will provide a credit for the full retail price of the helmet plus an additional 10% to be used towards a replacement helmet.
WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?
If you currently own a recalled helmet, then you should return your helmet by either:
Calling customer service at 1-888-258-9530 or by visiting helmetrecall.expertinquiry.com to request a return kit.
OR,
Visiting your Cycle Gear or J&P Cycles retail store and providing them with the helmet as well as certain identifying information.
WHAT IF YOU HAVE PREVIOUSLY PAID FOR A REPLACEMENT HELMET FOR THIS PARTICULAR CONDITION?
If you replaced a recalled helmet because of the condition noted above prior to receiving this notice, you may be entitled to reimbursement. Please go to helmetrecall.expertinquiry.com to provide the required information to request reimbursement.

Chronology :
4/7/21, Comoto notified that certain Bilt Amped Evo Youth helmets that were tested at ACT Lab USA were found to be noncompliant with FMVSS 218. Youth S and Youth L size helmets, manufactured in 2021, failed the penetration test. In response, Comoto quarantined Bilt Amped Evo Youth helmets in inventory and launched an investigation into the cause of the failures with the manufacturer in China, ACT Lab USA, and ACT Lab China. Comoto was surprised by the failures because prior testing at ACT Lab China with passing results.
4/16/21, Comoto sent additional sample helmets testing at ACT Lab USA.
5/11/21, Comoto was notified that this 2nd round of testing resulted in penetration failures. 5/13/2021, the helmet manufacturer decided to increase the shell thickness of all Youth helmets. Subsequent testing yielded passing results.
Around 6/21, Comoto was also notified that medium Bilt Amped Evo Adult helmets that we had tested at ACT Lab USA were found to be noncompliant with FMVSS 218. Adult M size helmet had two 2nd impact dwell time failures with dwell times @ 200g slightly higher than 2.0 ms, and the Adult XL and Adult XXL had penetration failures. In response, the helmet manufacturer also increased the shell thickness of all Adult Amped Evo helmets and retested the thicker helmets at ACT Lab China in August of 2021. Those helmets received passing results.
12/21, Comoto sent sample XS, S, M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL, Youth Small, Youth Medium, Youth Large, and Youth XL Amped Evo Rapid helmets for testing at ACT Lab USA. The size M, L,2XL, & 3XL failed the penetration test. All other sizes passed. The following month, Comoto engaged another third-party laboratory, Southern Impact Research Center, to test size Medium, Large, 2XL and 3XL Amped Evo Rapid helmets. On February 7, 2022, Comoto was notified that only the size L helmet passed. The other helmets failed the penetration test. After reviewing the tests, Comoto decided to voluntarily initiate this recall.
