Hub Grease Inspection and
Replacement Instructions
SAF-HOLLAND® Axles with ConMet PSP Drum Brake Hubs December 2021
Introduction
Certain SAF-HOLLAND axle hub assemblies manufactured
between December 15, 2020 and November 15, 2021 may
have omitted the required amount of grease inside for
the hub.
Record all available trailer information, including customer
vehicle unit ID, full VIN, axle S/N and date of inspection. For
your convenience, Table 2 (refer to page 3) is provided
to record all the information needed to facilitate the labor
reimbursement. This information is required to release the
trailer and receive reimbursement.
For this inspection, SAF-HOLLAND has agreed to cover labor
hours per Table 1 (refer to page 2). Once the procedure
is complete, you will need to supply the Customer vehicle
unit ID, trailer VIN number, axle serial number and date of
inspection for labor reimbursement to SAF-Holland Warranty
[email protected] or (800)767-6967 and reference

1. General Safety Instructions

This manual is written based on the assumption
that OSHA or other applicable employee safety
regulations are followed by the location where
work is performed.

service procedures.

2. Identifying Units Without Proper
Grease
1. Orientate hub so that the fill port is located at the
12 o’clock position.
2. Remove fill plug and insert a clean dip-stick of 8″ minimum
at an angle until it makes contact with the side of the
hub (Figure 1).
3. Remove dip stick and check amount of grease. There
should be 3.0″ minimum on the stick (Figure 2).
4. If the proper amount is present reinstall fill-plug
(20-25 ft-lbs).
5. Mark the hub at the fill-plug with a green paint mark
(Figure 3).
6. If the proper amount is not present proceed to Section 3.
3a. Units Without Proper Grease –
0 Mileage / at OEM
1. Add proper amount of Mobilith 007 semi-fluid grease
(35 oz) to the hub.
2. Reinstall fill-plug (20-25 ft-lbs).
3b. Units Without Proper Grease –
Field/Inservice
1. Tear down wheel end, clean and inspect bearing journals,
and threads.
2. If spindle is in good condition replace with new wheel
end following ConMet installation procedure 10084844.
3. Mark the hub at the fill-plug with a green paint mark
(Figure 3).
4. If spindle is deemed not satisfactory replace both axle
(refer to section 4) and wheel end.
5. Mark the hub at the fill-plug with a green paint mark
(Figure 3).
4. Axle Replacement
1. Disconnect brake chambers/lines from axle.
2. Remove torque arm bolt from spring-seat (axle).
3. Remove spring retaining bolts.
4. Remove axle from slider.
5. Remove springs and install on new axle, refer to
XL-MS175 Section 6 for instructions. Use new hardware
for spring installation.
6. Place axle under slider and reinstall torque arm bolts and
spring retaining bolts, refer to XL-MS175 Section 6 for
instructions.

Descriptive Information : SAF-HOLLAND established a wheel end hub grease fill process for axles
containing a special, non-standard specified grease required by a single
customer. The grease fill process was set-up as a non-standard operation
compared with the current standard fill process that is programmable, metered,
and performed in tandem between road side and curb side portions of the axle
on the assembly line at SAF Holland Warrenton MO. The off-line productin
process did not 100% control the required amount of lubricant to the axles’
wheel end assemblies. The assembly process was modified to address the
process shortcoming and the first date of clean production was 16NOV21. As a
result of the fill process used, SAF Holland cannot confirm that all wheel ends on
7,040 axles sold between 01JAN21 and 16NOV21 were properly lubricated.

Description of the Safety Risk : Inadequate lubrication fill levels in the axle wheel hubs could lead to tapered
roller bearings not receiving proper lubrication to support function. This
could lead to possible failure of the hub bearings due to excessive heat and

internal damage. If the condition is not addressed through ensuring proper
grease levels this situation in an extreme case could lead to the potential of
the trailer’s wheel/tire/hub assembly becoming detached; increasing the
possibility of a loss of stability and / or control of the vehicle and vehicle
crash. Further it the trailer’s wheel/tire/hub assembly were to become
detached it could create a crash hazard to other vehicles.
Description of the Cause : Process does not contain technology that monitors metering of grease to stop
the assembly line and/or trigger Andon alerts for missing critical operation not
completed or stopped short of cycle.

•Dec 2, 2021 – Great Dane, via virtual meeting, verbally states they will issue a “573 Safety Recall Report” to
NHTSA on Dec 6, 2021, citing potential safety concern for wheel end failure due to grease missing from the axle
hub assembly.
Description of Remedy :
Description of Remedy Program : Mailing inspection/repair procedure to affected customers, work with
large value customer & end users to coordinate inspection process &
recordkeeping. Small volume customer , indiidual outreach to indentify
where the recalled unit is and who has it? Remedy deployment to
individual one-off end users. SAF-HOLLAND to pay for parts & labor
required to impliment inspection and repair (as needed) along with
reasonable towing costs.
How Remedy Component Differs
from Recalled Component :
Repair technicians are instructed by SAF-HOLLAND, Inc.service bulletin

with a green paint mark on individual axles, once the procedure is
completed on an axle.

was Corrected in Production :
Interim Corrective Action
At grease install a dip stick indicator is used for Road Side and Curb Side of
the axle to check that grease has been installed into the hub. Dip stick is
required stay in the hub until it is removed and verified by redundant
inspector. Dip sticks will be verified saved & placed in a holder at wheel
end. Supervisor required hourly to verify correct amount of dip sticks that
are present vs. number of axles produced per hour. Axle number written
on the hour-by-hour board and reported out on the assembly daily report.
Permanent Corrective Action: “a) Implement metering system so
operators applying grease to both wheel end hubs are being monitoring
for the required specified amount. b) Implement line lock technology that
only allows axle to move down the line only after the grease dispensing
system confirms electronically that the wheel ends hubs for both curb side
and rad side operations have received the specified amount.”
Recall Schedule :
Description of Recall Schedule : Initial letter one OEM (GDLP) & end user (Walmart) that received suspect
axles sent on 08DEC21. Letters will be mailed to 4 other sold to
customers that received 7 other suspect axles within 60 days.
