Kalmar has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in Ottawa T2 model terminal tractors manufactured between January 1, 2015 and April 1, 2022. As a result of this decision Kalmar has initiated a recall of the affected vehicles. Our investigation has determined that Kalmar Ottawa T2 vehicles with a trailer hand brake valve option can unintentionally cause the trailer parking brake valve to set and cause unexpected vehicle motion if the trailer hand brake valve is released too quickly. The parking brake can unexpectedly set, increasing the risk of a crash. In order to remedy the situation, you should contact your local Kalmar terminal tractor certified dealer and have them perform field campaign SB22RC0001. Kalmar will replace the tee fitting that ties the trailer handbrake valve to the parking brake valve and replace it with a union. The trailer hand brake valve vent is then routed through the floor of the cabin under the brake treadle. The remedy will take approximately 30 minutes (½ hour) to complete. The remedy will be performed at no cost to you. When the trailer handbrake valve vents, it pressurizes the vent port of the trailer palm valve. This pressurization sets the trailer parking brakes unexpectedly. FMVSS 1 : 121 – Air brake systems FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : The safety risk is that the trailer brakes being unexpectedly set may result in unexpected vehicle motion, increasing the risk of a crash. There have been no recorded accidents as a result of this issue to date. Description of the Cause : The trailer handbrake valve and the parking brake valve vent lines are plumbed together. Rapid release of the trailer handbrake causes a back pressure in the trailer parking brake valve which unintentionally causes the trailer parking brakes to set. Mar 29, 2022: test and reproduce failure in test truck. Mar 30, 2022: Any production trucks with option put on quality hold. Apr 22, 2022: Determined this was a safety issued and need of notifying NHTSA. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : The solution is to replace the Tee fitting that ties the trailer handbrake valve to the parking brake valve and replace it with a union. The trailer hand brake valve vent is then to be routed thru the floor of the cabin under the brake treadle. We are releasing a service kit, SK8927. Production drawings are updated. The remedy will be performed at no cost by Kalmar dealers and authorized service personnel. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : Air line routing. The remedy has the trailer park brake valve and the trailer handbrake valve vent lines routed separately through the floor of the cab.
