Vanguard has decided that a a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 2022 VIP 53 ft. trailers. The wheel hubs may have an insufficient amount of lubrication, which could cause the hub bearings to fail. Hub bearing failure could cause the wheel hub assembly to detach, causing a loss of stability and control, or create a road hazard, and increase the risk of a crash. To remedy this safety defect, a Walmart Hub Grease Inspection Campaign – SAF-HOLLAND has been underway at various Walmart service locations since 10DEC21. The campaign called for inspecting the lubricant level in suspect axles and then, depending on the results of the inspection, 1) replenishment of the lubricant in the axle, 2) replacement of the wheel end on the axle or 3) replacement of the complete axle assembly. The same procedure is to be followed to implement this Safety Recall, 22E-014, initiated by SAF-HOLLAND at this time. To implement Safety Recall 22E-014, you are required to inspect the axle wheel ends by following the instructions in Attachment A, SAF-HOLLAND service bulletin, XL-AS20117SB-en-US. Reimbursement for the parts and labor costs associated with implementing the Safety Recall will be in accordance with SAF-HOLLAND’s usual warranty procedure. The level of reimbursement will vary based on the remedy that is required to be implemented. Labor reimbursement, in hours, will be paid at the local repair shop’s rate/hour. Replacement parts that may be required, based on the results of following the steps in service bulletin XL-AS20117SB-en-US, will be provided by SAFHOLLAND at no charge. Attachment B is a list of Vanguard National Trailers location(s) that received axles that are covered by this Safety Recall, the quantities received and the dates they were shipped. Attachment C contains the service information for each unit that was reported and invoiced to SAFHOLLAND as having been serviced during the Walmart Hub Grease Inspection Campaign – SAFHOLLAND. The attached SAF-HOLLAND inspection procedure (XL-AS20117SB-en-US) was followed to implement the inspection campaign, by Walmart. Vanguard National Trailer affected VIN #’s: SAF-HOLLAND has not been able to provide us us verification of successful completion of the inspection of the defective axles of the identified Vanguard VIN#’s, and that the units have been addressed and completed by the Walmart in accordance with the Hub Grease Inspection Campaign – SAF-HOLLAND. SAF Holland is the Manufacturer & our supplier for the suspensions in question. SAF Holland notified Vanguard verbally of the issue on 4/25/2022 of their recall for potential low wheel lube. Their actual notification letter was sent to wrong address & never delivered until late to me until late June once it was re-routed. I then solicited SAF Holland as they had already begun & completed the remedy of inspection on these units starting back in 12/10/2021. After being alerted to this, I thought this had completed the notification task. After learning that this is not correct, and we as the OEM also needed to notify customer direct as this was an issue across multiple OEM supplied by SFA Holland. As a result, my recall submission was then simply referencing the completion of the inspections engaged by SAF Holland. In pursuing proof that the remedy was in fact completed, SAF Holland was not able to produce evidence that in fact the 2 SAF Holland suspensions under the Vanguard trailers units in question. Upon learning this and not receiving any additional information form SAF Holland, I completed the notification letter as directed. for Vanguard had been inspected. To date SAF Holland has not confirmed completion of the remedy which in turn lead to our customer notification letter. Our customer notification letter was sent directly to Walmart on 10/20/2022 via certified mail. We received certified mail acknowledgement that the notification letter was received on 10/28/22 by Mr. Randall Stafford @ Walmart. The Remedy is prescribed by the suspension manufacturer & our supplier, SAF Holland. The remedy is outlined in SAF Holland literature # XL-AS20117SB-en-US. The remedy details an inspection of the lube level in the suspension wheelends and also includes additional repair information if needed for any replacement of components as determined by the individual unit’s inspection results. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : See SAF-Holland Recall 22E-014. The initial inspection of the suspension wheel end determines if the lube level is correct. If found correct, no other remedy is needed. If lube level was low, addtional insepection of the wheel-end componets are needed and directed by SAF Holland per thier notification leter. Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : This was not a Vanguard manufacturing issue and not part of our production line operations or sequences., This is a purchased/supplied item to Vanguard assembled /manufactured by SAF Holland.
