Our records indicate that some of the product, (“cooktops”), listed below were purchased by your company and may either be in your inventory or have been installed in a RV that your company sells. Dometic Corporation apologizes for the inconvenience that this places on your business and the requirement that you now have, per CFR 49, Part 573, to initiate your own recall to handle these products. Please note that as of this notice it is unlawful for you to sell a product that is installed, but not sold or is in your inventory before it has had the remedy applied. Dometic Corporation is advising you to locate ALL the following models of recreational vehicle cooktops and quarantine those that have not been installed in a RV or that are still in your inventory. Furthermore, you will need to collect model, serial number, and VIN number of ALL RV’s that have been shipped with these model cooktops (corresponding to the serial numbers listed below) installed and provide that list to Dometic Corporation as early as possible. The following models with their respective serial number ranges may be in your inventory. • CE99-ZF: Cooktop with two burners and safety glass cover o 02093610034000001 – 02093610034000600 o 11993610034000001 – 11993610034000510 o 12593610034000001 – 12593610034000500 • PI8022: Cooktop with two burners and safety glass cover o 11093610034600001 – 11093610034600550 o 12393610034600001 – 12393610034600550 Dometic Corporation will provide full replacement cooktops as the remedy for this recall. The remedy kit will include instructions, a replacement unit, a mandatory recall response card (to be filled out at the time of the repair), and specific requirements that an authorized service center must install the remedy free of charge to the end use customer. All remedy installations at the OEM will require that the recall response card be filled out and returned to Dometic Corporation when the remedy is completed. The recall response card is an essential requirement to protect both the OEM and Dometic Corporation in the record keeping and reporting of the recall remedy process to NHTSA. Please advise all your dealer body organizations, that as of this notice, it is unlawful for them to sell a product that is installed but not sold to an end user or is in their inventory before it has had the remedy applied to the product. We understand that you may have sold and shipped product ahead of this notice and we are willing to participate in supporting you, by distributing the same remedy kits to your end use customers, if you so choose. Whether you choose to allow us to conduct this remedy campaign on your behalf or whether you elect to conduct the campaign on your own, please provide lists of customers, the vehicle type, VIN number, and other pertinent information needed to contact these customers and for the reporting responsibilities that Dometic Corporation has to NHTSA. Additionally, see section below entitled “What you need to do.” The Problem: The user of a recreational vehicle or marine vessel may become aware of the potential safety-related defect during operation of the cooktop. The burner control valve, mated directly to the control knob via the valve stem, may leak gas. This gas will leak directly into the recessed portion of the cooktop, where the knobs and ignitor are located, and may be ignited by the active burner(s). The ignition will result in a small pilot flame directly at the control knob. What Dometic Corporation Will Do: Dometic Corporation is aggressively approaching all OEM’s, Dealers, Retailers, and End Users with certified letters (for which they must sign), defining the product, models, population, and direction on action to be taken. The remedy will consist of 1) instructions to locate the cooktop serial number 2) Recall Response Card to be filled out and returned to receive the replacement unit. Again, Dometic Corporation is supplying this recall remedy at no charge. The burner control valve may have incurred abrasions, internally or externally, on the mating metal sealing surfaces of the burner control valve that may have led to leaks as noted in different European models, and could possibly lead to similar leak incidents in a limited number of US cooktop models as noted above. FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : Dometic states there is an increased risk of fire and injury. A detailed description of the potential safety-related defect is associated with the burner control valve where the valve stem is located directly behind the cooking knob of the cooktops. There is a potential for the gas leak behind the control knob to ignite and create a small pilot flame and present a possibility of a burn to the user. Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : While being used the smell of gas may precede any ignition and the presence of flame. Dometic handled and identified all initial investigations and testing to determine the recall and defect. May 11, 2022 – received recall notification from NHTSA stating: In a report dated May 3, 2022, Dometic Corporation notified NHTSA that a safety defect exists in certain 2-burner Cooktops, model numbers CE99-ZF and PI8022. May 18, 2022 – received a recall notification letter from Dometic via email, as well Dometic provided a list of serial numbers sold to Bigfoot affected by the recall May 18, 2022 – internal review to determine which units were affected by said recall and/or in Bigfoot inventory in our stockroom May 19, 2022 – contact the two dealers affected by said recall via email, identifying which units sold to them had been affected. As well, as to collect any missing customer info from the dealerships. May 19, 2022 – draft owner letter submitted to recall portal Recall remedies to be completed by Dometic. No warranty claims or field/ service reports were reported to Bigfoot prior to the recall. Zero deaths/injuries were reported. Part 573 Safety Recall Report 22V-357 Page 3 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 June 2, 2022 – owner notification letters mailed out Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : Dometic will be providing replacements with newer cooktops that are not within the recall population. Remedy replacement will be completed at no cost to the end-user. The user will indicate that they have an affected cooktop and supply the serial number information to Dometic Corporation. The remedy replacement unit will be sent with instructions to complete the installation and functional verification at no cost to the end-user by a qualified RV technician. Reimbursement to the qualified RV technician will be provided once Dometic Corporation receives the recall response card and recalled unit documenting that the replacement has been made. Dometic also will be proving replacements of inventory still How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : The replacement/exchange unit will have a completely different serial number outside of the recall population that will not have the defective burner control valve. The units will be visually the same to the end-user. Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : See Dometic recall notice 22E021. Recall Schedule : Description of Recall Schedule : We will provide a completed list of affected units, with customer and dealer info as requested by them. May 19, we will be contacting the two dealers affected by this recall, noting the unit’s serial number sold to them. On May 19 we will draft the customer notification letter and submit it o the portal. Once this has been confirmed we will send customers the recall notice and appropriate envelope. We will update the dates and any additional info as we continue through this process.
