Spartan Fire, LLC has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain model year 2021-2023, Gladiator, MetroStar and FC-94 model emergency response chassis cabs. What is the defect? Weldon, a division of Akron Brass Company, produces Node, an electrical multiplex module. In the affected products, the Node contains a termination resistor installed on the node circuit board instead of the termination resistor being installed only within the electrical harness. If the vehicle network design has not accounted for this additional resistor, it may reduce the bus resistance below the defined tolerance levels and may lead to a loss of data on the CAN network. Installations with multiple nodes are more likely to experience the condition. If the bus resistance is reduced, the CAN network connection could fail which may interrupt the transfer of data on this connection. If the CAN network connection is interrupted or fails and depending on how the vehicle’s electrical systems are designed, it may impact the operation of various electrical loads controlled by the Node, including vehicle lighting, which may increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Action: The Final Stage Manufacturer or Spartan Dealers will remove and replace the two Hercules HC 1.5 nodes. An RMA should be issued to return the affected nodes back to Spartan. Estimated time for the remedy may be up to 2 hours for removal, installation and programming of both nodes. What should the final stage manufacturer do? On the attached document, you will find a list of chassis cabs Spartan has sold to you. If you agree the identified chassis, contains a safety defect, you are reminded of your responsibility to notify the National Spartan Fire, LLC. STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS 1) Contact Spartan Customer Service at 1-800-867-6478 to open case and request replacement Hercules HC nodes. Please have the last 8 of the VIN and the serial numbers from the nodes available. 2) The customer service representative will issue a return material authorization (RMA) and instructions to return the old node. Retain packaging that the new nodes came in for use in returning old node. 3) Upon receiving the replacement nodes, they will need be programmed with OEM bin files. If you are a dealer/service center performing the repair, you will need to contact the OEM/body builder to procure the necessary bin files. The bin files can either be loaded to the node with the appropriate bench harness or after installation in truck through the Weldon communication connector under the dash to the left of the steering column. Remove and Replace Hercules HC Node: Driver’s Side Behind Gauges 4) Ensure master and ignition switches are turned off 5) Remove the 6 screws holding Instrument cluster in place and remove instrument cluster. Refer to Figure 2.1 Figure 2. Refer to Figure 3.1 Figure 3.1 9) Install the new HC node and tighten fasteners. 10) Reconnect connectors and ensure they are all fully seated. 11) Reinstall instrument cluster and tighten fasteners. Remove and Replace Hercules HC Node: Officer’s Side Behind Glove Box 12) Locate glove box on officer’s side dash area 13) Remove fasteners and lift glove box assembly from dash area. On April 29, 2022, Weldon was contacted by an OEM that described an issue with the CAN connection when installing the Node. Weldon was able to isolate the issue to the inclusion of the additional termination resistor on the circuit board. Weldon stopped the shipment of additional units. On May 2, 2022, Weldon reviewed the technical details affecting the Node to confirm the issue, considered whether the same issue impacts any similar products and decided to conduct a safety recall. On May 3, 2022, Weldon determined a recent shipment of a variation of the Node sold under a private label and to a single customer was also impacted. Weldon confirmed with the customer these units had never been installed in a vehicle and remained in the customer’s inventory. Weldon secured all of the affected products from the customer’s inventory and on May 4, 2022 reworked those units to remove the additional resistor. On May 16, 2022, Spartan Fire received communication from Weldon about recall 22E-037 for their V-mux Hercules HC Node 1.5. Determined the potential population. Escalated the issue to REV Group Management. May 20, 2022 – REV’s senior leadership approved a voluntary recall for this issue. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : Weldon will notify affected customers and ask them to return any affected product that remains in their inventory to Weldon to be reworked. Spartan will notify vehicle purchasers and Weldon will provide replacement units and reimburse for labor costs. The affected product sold under the private label have already been remedied. If any vehicles were already remedied it would be covered under the normal warranty process. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : The remedy component will have the additional termination resistor removed from the circuit board. Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : Existing inventory at Weldon was isolated and shipments placed on hold on 4/29/2022, the same day the potential issue was first reported to Weldon.
