Summary
Escape Trailer (Escape Trailer) is recalling certain 2018-2021 Escape 17, 19, 21, and 5.0TA travel trailers, equipped with certain SDS2 2-Burner Drop-in Cooktops. The internal aluminum burner tubes connecting the gas valves to the cook top burners can fracture from excessive vibration or shock, causing a gas leak.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the cooktop, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 23, 2022. Owners may contact Escape Trailers customer service at 1-604-703-1650.

Escape Trailer Industries has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 2018-2021 Escape 17, 19, 21, and 5.0TA travel trailers, equipped with a Suburban SDS2 drop in cooktop.
We apologize for this situation and want to assure you that, with your assistance, we will correct this condition. Our commitment is to provide you with the highest level of service and support.
What is the issue?
Suburban Manufacturing
is recalling SDS2 – 2 Burner cooktops that were installed on Escape RV travel trailers. The internal aluminum burner tubes connecting the gas valves to the cook top burners can fracture from excessive vibration or shock experienced through travel in an Escape RV. The burner tube could crack resulting a leak of propane when the top burner gas valve is opened to use the appliance. If ignited the propane could result in a fire and/or explosion which could result in personal injury.
What will Escape do?
Escape Trailer Industries is contacting all affected customers to make them aware of this defect and providing customers with contact details for Suburban in order for them to request a replacement unit at no cost.
What should you do?
You or your dealer must contact Suburban’s Customer Service department at 423-775-2131 ext 7101 or via email at [email protected] or [email protected]. Suburban will coordinate with you about the replacement cooktop.
Chronology :
9/24/2020 – Suburban was notified by an Escape RV customer of an issue with their SDS2 cooktop.
09/25/2020 – Suburban opens and investigation on the SDS2 cooktop.
11/11/2020 – Lab Analysis completed on failed cooktop burner tubes indicating hardening. 11/2020 – 8/2021 – Suburban communicates with Escape RV regarding the issue.
08/19/2021 – Suburban requests information on the usage of the SDS2 and the vehicle information the cooktops are installed in.
09/2021 – Information and Data is exchanged between Escape RV and Suburban. Escape notes vibration of the unsupported regulator mass as a possible cause for the work hardening on the aluminum tubes.
10/1/2021 – Issue was forwarded to THOR Corporate for review.
10/7/2021 – THOR review complete issue determined to be isolated to Escape RV. No further actions taken due to lack of cooperation by Escape RV.
2/18/2022 – NHTSA ODI office notifies Suburban of 2 VOQs associated with the SDS2 cooktop recently filed.
3/4/2022 – Suburban forwards VOQs to THOR VSRC office for review. THOR requests any warranty claims data from Forest River

If ignited the propane could result in a fire and/or explosion which could result in personal injury. Description of the Cause : Suburban Lab analysis of failed burner tubes indicate hardening of the aluminum burner tubes likely caused by repeated impact or excessive vibration. Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : The owner could possibly hear a louder than normal hissing sound when the cooktop gas valve is turned to the “on” position.
