July 28, 2022 Subject: Recall 22KWC – T180, T280, T380 ABS Telltale not enabled NHTSA Recall number 22V424 This notice applies to your vehicle; VIN: Dear Kenworth Customer, This notice is sent to you in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Kenworth Truck Company has decided that certain Model Year 2022-2023 T180, T280, and T380 chassis built from 01/25/2021 through 01/07/2022 fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 105 – Hydraulic and Electric Brake Systems. The ABS telltale does not illuminate in the digital display during self-test or power-on and does not indicate to the operator any malfunction of the ABS has occurred. This is non-compliant with US regulation FMVSS 105. The purpose of this letter is to notify you that Kenworth has initiated a recall campaign to address the defect. At this time, software and a repair procedure are not available. You will be notified when the software update becomes available, and you may schedule an appointment with a dealer to obtain the repair at that time. The problem is… ABS telltale does not illuminate during selftest or during ABS malfunction. What your dealer will do… When the updated software is available, program the appropriate modules. What you must do … There is no action required on your part at this time. You will receive a letter notifying you when the repair procedure and software are available. If you had this repair performed before you received this letter, you may be eligible to receive reimbursement for the cost of obtaining a pre-notification remedy of the problem associated with this recall. This is noncompliant with FMVSS 105, which requires an indicator lamp for antilock brake system malfunction. FMVSS 1 : 105 – Hydraulic and electric brake systems FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : On affected vehicles, the driver may not be informed of a malfunction of the ABS system. This may increase the risk of a crash. Description of the Cause : The parameter which enables the ABS telltale was inadvertently disabled. All vehicles at Paccar Plants held for corrective action. Investigation opened. 03-15-2022: Permanent corrective action implemented. Investigation continues. 04-11-2022: Affected population updated and under review. 06-08-2022: Investigation summarized and affected population firmed. 06-09-2022: Safety committee meeting held. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : Paccar will notify customers and dealers, and will complete a software update to correct the parameter setting. This will enable the ABS telltale to function properly per regulatory requirements. Owners who incurred costs to obtain a remedy for the problem addressed by the recall in advance of receiving notification may seek reimbursement through the process outlined in the general reimbursement plan on file. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : Vehicles with the remedy will show the ABS telltale parameter as enabled. Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : Engineering documentation has been updated to ensure the ABS telltale is enabled on vehicles with hydraulic brakes and ABS.
