Wheel Lock-Up From Improperly Tightened Spokes – 2012-2017 Ural Motorcycles

Dealers will replace the wheel rims, spokes, tubes, and rim strips, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed August 17, 2022. Failure to repair within sixty (60) days after tender of a vehicle is prima facie evidence of failure to repair within a reasonable time. If the condition is not adequately repaired within a reasonable time, the owner may be entitled to an identical or reasonable equivalent vehicle at no charge or to a refund of the purchase price less a reasonable allowance for depreciation. To avoid having to provide these burdensome solutions, every effort must be made to promptly schedule an appointment with each owner and to repair their vehicle as soon as possible. Defect Involved Irbit Motorworks has determined that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 2012 to 2017 model Urals. The known assembly defect is specific to aluminum rims used in production between 9/15/2011 and 10/3/2017. The cause of this defect is improper assembly, specifically over-torque of the wheel spokes that can potentially cause the wheel rim to crack. Possible consequence of this defect can include broken and/or split rims and possible failure resulting in wheel lock up or damage that could potentially lead to vehicle crash. All Ural sidecar motorcycles manufactured between 9/15/2011 and 10/3/2017 will be recalled for the replacement of aluminum rims by the servicing dealer using new inventory provided by Irbit Motorworks. This excludes wheel rims previously replaced by warranty and/or under NHTSA Recall No. 13V-507. Vehicles Involved This recall includes all 2012-2017 Ural motorcycles with sidecars manufactured between 9/15/2011 and 10/3/2017. Involved vehicles have been identified by Vehicle Identification Number Computer Listings. Computer listings contain the complete Vehicle Identification Number, owner name and address data, and are furnished to involved dealers with the recall bulletin. Upon review it was determined that a potential defect may exist for all wheel rims provided by our supplier ComStart and assembled between 9/15/2011 and 10/3/2017. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : The remedy program will involve the replacement of all wheel rims (including new spoke set, tube and rim strips) for all Ural sidecar motorcycles manufactured between 9/15/2011 and 10/3/2017. Repairs will be completed free of charge by an authorized Ural Dealer. Dealers will be reimbursed following the flat rate schedule requirements and at their published hourly shop rate. This recall excludes wheel rims previously replaced by warranty and/or under NHTSA Recall No. 13V-507. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : Wheel rims have been provided by our new supplier Italcerchio S.R.L. and the assembly process is very closely monitored by IMZ factory. All components provided by Italcerchio S.R.L. have exceeded all quality inspection requirements. Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : The recall condition was corrected during production by changing the assembly procedures and quality control inspections at PK IMZ factory. In addition, the supplier of aluminum wheel rims was changed starting with 2018 model year production. Recall Schedule : Description of Recall Schedule : Dealer notification letters will be initially emailed starting on 7/15/22 with all hard copies sent by USPS on or before 7/31/22. Interim owner notification letters outlining the details of the recall will be mailed by USPS beginning on 8/1/2022 and completed on or before 8/15/2022.
