On certain vehicles with a foldable upper bunk assembly, the mounting pivot bolt of the upper bunk may not have been fully torqued to spec to properly connect that mounting point.
Describe the safety risk:
A loose mounting pivot bolt may result in the upper bunk falling potentially injuring the occupant using the bottom bunk.
Identify any warning which can precede or occur:
Occupants will likely notice the insecure mounting when lifting or lowering the upper bunk, which is done with the vehicle stationary and thus not subject to road vibration.

Provide the chronology of events leading up to the defect decision or test data for the noncompliance decision:
In late October, 2022 DTNA identified a warranty claim on an upper bunk assembly falling (albeit with no notice of injury nor death) and opened an preliminary investigation. In November, 2022, after identifying additional reports, DTNA opened an investigation to further review with its bunk suppliers. Investigative work continued through December and early to mid-January. In late-January, 2023 DTNA received a report back from the supplier identifying that the bolt may not have been properly torqued. At no time prior to this report did DTNA reasonably believe that the supplied bed assembly was out of specification. Promptly after receiving this notification, on February 3, 2023 DTNA decided to initiate a voluntary safety recall for vehicles equipped with the bunk assembly built with under torqued bolts. In early May DTNA updated the Chronology with to clarify that there 5 warranty claims total between the dates of October 2021 and October 2022, with no other reports, and no death or injuries reported. In June 2023, upon reviewing the DIR for FL974, DTNA noticed a typo and amended the DIR to correct it.

Vehicles will be updated with the correct bolts and torque. Repairs will be performed by Daimler Truck North America authorized service facilities. Details of the reimbursement plan will be included in the owner’s notification letter.

Subject: Freightliner Coronado Upper Bunk Wall Mounting This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Daimler Truck North America LLC (DTNA), on behalf of its Freightliner Trucks Division, has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain Freightliner Coronado 2021-2023 model year vehicles, manufactured from August 28, 2020, through January 12, 2023. On the affected vehicles, equipped with a foldable upper bunk assembly, the mounting pivot bolts of the upper bunk may not have been fully torqued to spec to properly connect those mounting points. A loose mounting pivot bolt may result in the upper bunk falling, potentially injuring the occupant using the bottom bunk. Occupants will likely notice the insecure mounting when lifting or lowering the upper bunk, which is done with the vehicle stationary and thus not subject to road vibration.A Daimler Truck North America authorized service facility will update the vehicles with the correct bolts and torque. The recall will take approximately one half hour and will be performed free of charge. Please contact an authorized Daimler Truck North America dealer to arrange to have the recall performed and to ensure that parts are available at the dealership. On affected vehicles, the upper bunk mounting pivot bolt may loosen, resulting in the bunk potentially falling over and hitting the occupant. This may result in a safety risk to the vehicle’s occupants.Solution: For all involved vehicles, a DTNA-authorized service facility will upgrade the current bolts and torque them to the correct specification. This recall action must be completed on all affected vehicles, at no charge to the vehicle owner.Owner Notification Mailing Schedule: Owner letters are expected to be mailed to affected customers during the week of April 3, 2023.IMPORTANT NOTE: Dealers should make their personnel aware of this safety recall. Models Affected: Specific model years 2021-2023 Freightliner Coronado vehicles, manufactured from August 27, 2020 through January 12, 2023. General Information
Daimler Truck North America LLC (DTNA), on behalf of its Freightliner Trucks division, has decided that a defect that relates to motor vehicle safety exists on the vehicles mentioned above.
On certain vehicles with a foldable upper bunk assembly, the mounting pivot bolts of the upper bunk may not have been fully torqued to spec to properly connect those mounting points. A loose mounting pivot bolt may result in the upper bunk falling, potentially injuring the occupant using the bottom bunk.
Vehicles will be updated with the correct bolts and torque. There are approximately 220 vehicles involved in this campaign. Additional Repairs
Dealers must complete all outstanding Recall and Field Service campaigns prior to the sale or delivery of a vehicle. A Dealer will be liable for any progressive damage that results from its failure to complete campaigns before sale or delivery of a vehicle.
Owners may be liable for any progressive damage that results from failure to complete campaigns within a reasonable time after receiving notification.

Claims for Credit
You will be reimbursed for your parts, labor, and handling (landed cost for Export Distributors) by submitting your claim through the Warranty system within 30 days of completing this campaign. Please reference the following information in OWL:

• U.S. and Canada — Reimbursement for Prior Repairs. When a customer asks about reimbursement, please do the following:
• Accept the documentation of the previous repair.
• Make a brief check of the customer’s paperwork to see if the repair may be eligible for reimburse- ment. (See the “Copy of Owner Letter” section of this bulletin for reimbursement guidelines.)
• Submit an OWL Recall Pre-Approval Request for a decision.
• Include the approved amount on your claim in the Other Charges section.
• Attach the documentation to the pre-approval request.
• If approved, submit a based on claim for the pre-approval.
• Reimburse the customer the appropriate amount.

On the affected vehicles, equipped with a foldable upper bunk assembly, the mounting pivot bolts of the upper
bunk may not have been fully torqued to spec to properly connect those mounting points. A loose mounting pivot bolt may result in the upper bunk falling, potentially injuring the occupant using the bottom bunk. Occupants will likely notice the insecure mounting when lifting or lowering the upper bunk, which is done with the vehicle stationary and thus not subject to road vibration.
A Daimler Truck North America authorized service facility will update the vehicles with the correct bolts and torque. The recall will take approximately one half hour and will be performed free of charge.

Models Affected: Specific Model Year 2021-2023 Freightliner Coronado model vehicles, manufactured August 27, 2020 through January 12, 2023. Upper Bunk Mounting Fastener Replacement
1. Check the base label (Form WAR259) for a completion sticker for FL964 (Form WAR260) indicating this work has been done. The base label is usually located on the passenger-side door, about 12 inches (30 cm) below the door latch. If a completion sticker is present, no work is needed. If a completion sticker is not present, continue with the next step.
2. Park the vehicle on a level surface, shut down the engine, and set the parking brake. Chock the rear tires.
3. Remove the upper bunk mattress.
4. Access the two upper bunk pivot fasteners and nuts. See Fig. 1. 1 03/10/2023

Promptly after receiving this notification, on February 1, 2023 DTNA decided to initiate a voluntary safety recall for vehicles equipped with the bunk assembly built with under torqued bolts.

In early May DTNA updated the Chronology with to clarify that there 5 warranty claims total between the dates of October 2021 and October 2022, with no other reports, and no death or injuries reported. In June 2023, upon reviewing the DIR for FL974, DTNA noticed a typo and amended the DIR to correct it.
