) is recalling certain 2023 Granite (GR) vehicles. The front-drive steer axle fasteners may not have been tightened sufficiently and could come loose, resulting in a complete separation of the axle assembly joints.
Remedy
Dealers will replace and tighten the axle fasteners, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed March 20, 2023. Owners may contact Mack
customer service at 1-800-866-1177. Mack

On certain vehicles, there exists the potential of under torque on fasteners on the axle assembly, specifically: Brake caliper to knuckle, steer arm to knuckle, lower kingpin to knuckle, tie-rod to knuckle. The failure of one of these joints could lead to loss of control of the vehicle, which could result in a crash.
There have been no accidents or injuries or field complaints or warranty claims related to this issue.

- The National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act and Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Act require dealers to ensure that all new and used vehicles are free of safety defects and comply with all relevant safety standards at the time of delivery to the consumer.
- Dealers should make their personnel aware of the safety recall. In the event that a dealer has a vehicle included in the safety recall in their inventory to be sold, the condition must be corrected before releasing it to a customer.

(March 2023)
Mack Trucks
has determined that certain 2023 model year GR vehicles build with a Meritor
MX810 driven steer axle could have under torqued fasteners on the axle assembly. On affected vehicles there is a potential risk that fastener securing the brake caliper to knuckle, steer arm to knuckle, lower king pin to knuckle, and tie rod to knuckle could fail resulting in a vehicle crash, property damage and/or personal injury.
Mack Trucks
has not received any complaints or reports of vehicle crashes because of this safety issue; therefore, Mack
considers this as a proactive measure to protect the public and Mack
’s customers from the potential risk associated with this defect.
To ensure that these vehicles meet Mack
’s stringent quality requirements, follow the instructions outlined below to check torques of certain fasteners and replace as necessary.

Repair Instructions
| Important Note! |
| Record Truck VIN number, vehicle mileage, axle serial number, repair date, technician name, and any bolts that were replaced. |
1. Secure vehicle for service.
2. Park the vehicle on a lever surface.
3. Place the gear lever in neural.
4. Install wheel chocks.
5. Lift & support the vehicle using jack stands.
6. Remove the tire and wheel assemblies on the steer axle.
7. Set torque wrench to 510 lb-ft (691 Nm) and apply clockwise tightening rotation to each steer arm /king pin bolt. (See above)
8. If any of the bolts turn, remove the fastener and replace with new one. Torque to 510 lb-ft (691 Nm).
9. Apply colored paint pen stripe across each bolt head as they are torqued.
10. Set torque wrench to 350 lb-ft (475 Nm) and apply clockwise tightening rotation to each caliper hex fasteners.
11. If any of the hex fastener turn, remove and replace with a new fastener and torque to 400 lb-ft (542 Nm).
12. Apply colored paint pen stripe across each bolt head as they are torqued.
13. Remove the cotter pin from the cross-tube end castle nut.
14. Use a paint pen to mark the cotter pin hole alignment on the top of the ball stud head.
15. Set torque wrench to 120 lb-ft (163 Nm) and apply clockwise tightening rotation. If the nut turns re-set the torque wrench to 150 lb-ft (203 Nm) and check for cotter pin hole alignment with the castle nut.
16. Do not back the nut off, if necessary, continue to turn the nut in a clockwise tightening rotation until the castle nut and the cotter pin hole are aligned.
17. Install a new cotter pin and properly bend the ends locking the pin.
18. Reinstall the wheels and torque the nuts to specification.
19. Remove the jack stands and lower the truck.
20. Remove wheel chocks.
21. Release vehicle back to service.

February 23 2023 Product Safety Working Group was notified of the findings.
February 27 2023 Product Safety Working Group makes the recommendation to the Product Safety Committee that a product safety defect exists.

The front-drive steer axle fasteners may not have been tightened sufficiently and could come loose, resulting in a complete separation of the axle assembly joints.

Steer axle assembly separation can result in a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.
