The recalled products include an additional safety range; products not included in the recall have had no reported issues. Additional products not included in the recall were produced after the corrective action was put in place. We are an equipment supplier and do not have make/model/model year information. The entire quantity involved were shipped during calendar year 2023. Production Dates : FEB 07, 2023 – MAY 17, 2023 Description of Defect : Description of the Defect : During assembly of the axle the grease zerk may not have been tightened properly. If a grease zerk is not tightened correctly on the roadside end of the axle assembly equipped with a 6-lug hub, it may separate from the end of the spindle and become lodged in a slot of the castle nut. This condition can interfere with the rotating dust cap which can potentially sheer the cotter pin, allowing the castle nut to back off FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : An improperly tightened grease zerk can ultimately lead to a wheel coming off of the axle increasing the chance of injury or crash. Description of the Cause : Axle assembly operator error during install of the grease zerk,. Additional incidents reported to Lippert by GDRV as investigation into root cause continued. 5/25/2023: Lippert team notified Grand Design of our request to inspect all axles at GDRV locations as well as ship yards. 5/26/2023: Lippert inspection of specific axles continued 6/1/2023: Lippert internal team reviews findings of axle inspections for potential grease zerk placement error 6/15/2023: Met with Grand Design RV to review information of 1.172 axles inspected and two axles found to not have zerk properly seated. 6/19/2023: Internal meeting with Lippert Leadership and decision made to file recall. 6/22/2023: NHTSA 573 filed Part 573 Safety Recall Report 23E-046 Page 3 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : Remedy program: Inspect all material to verify grease zerks are tightened correctly. Any non-compliant product will be repaired and/or replaced as necessary. Lippert will reimburse OEM’s, dealers, and consumers for any labor and/or parts needed to perform the inspection and complete the recall. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : Remedied components have been certified through the revised manufacturing process. Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : 5/29/2023: Implemented a 1-piece flow process to ensure the zerk is tightened correctly during the installation step, and all operators retrained to the new process and audited on a regular basis. 6/12/2023: To further improve the tightening process, a torque specification was defined to discreetly identify the zerk is tightened properly. REASON FOR THIS RECALL Lippert has conducted a thorough investigation and determined an issue which relates to motor vehicle safety may exist in certain vehicles equipped with specific 5,200 pound and 6,000 pound Curt axles. There is the possibility a grease zerk installed during the axle assembly process may not have been properly tightened. Our records indicate your company purchased one or more of the involved Lippert products built between 02/07/2023 and 05/17/2023 which are the subject of this recall. The involved products sold to you which are subject to the recall are listed in detail in a spreadsheet included with this notice. If these products are still in your inventory, you must not sell or install these into units. It is a violation of federal law to sell any of the listed products covered by this recall until the defect is remedied. The inspection and/or remedy instructions will be sent to you as soon as they are completed. WHAT WE WILL DO Lippert will reimburse dealers or mobile repair facilities to inspect the involved axles to verify the grease zerks are tightened correctly and to replace or properly tighten as necessary. As stated above, we will forward the written instructions once completed. Any parts which may be determined to be needed for the remedy are currently available. WHAT YOU SHOULD DO The involved products must be inspected per the instruction document we will be forwarding to you once completed. Once your company is notified the inspection and/or corrective action has been completed please submit a claim documenting the details to [email protected] for payment of any parts and labor charges.
