Driver’s Air Bag May Become Deactivated/FMVSS 208

A deactivated air bag cannot deploy as intended during a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

Summary

BCS Automotive Interface Solutions US, L (BCS Automotive) is recalling certain Steering Column Control Modules (SCCM). The SCCM electrical functions may fail and deactivate the driver’s air bag. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 208, “Occupant Crash Protection.”

 

Remedy

The affected vehicle manufacturers will determine the appropriate remedy for their vehicles. Vehicle manufacturers were notified November 8, 2023.

Chronology :

On October 12,2023 the supplier American Furukawa Inc. notified BCS Automotive Interface Solutions on supplying Clocksprings with busbars that were potentially non-compliant and determining that the case warranted reporting to NHTSA. On November 8, 2023 BCS Automotive Interface Solutions notified its customers on shipping potentially non-compliant products.
