Summary

Mack Trucks, Inc. (Mack) is recalling certain 2020 Anthem and Pinnacle trucks. The conspicuity reflectors at the back of the cab may be blocked by the exhaust system. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, “Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Assoc. Equipment.”

 

Remedy

Mack has notified owners, and dealers will install additional reflectors on the back of the cab, free of charge. The recall began April 10, 2019. Owners may contact Mack customer service at 1-800-866-1177. Mack’s number for this recall is SC0418.

SAFETY RECALL INFORMATION

Mack Trucks Inc. has determined that the vertical white conspicuity reflectors on the back of the cab of certain AN and PI model vehicles may be blocked by the exhaust and air tank. As a result, a non-compliance with U.S. and Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 108, which states “no more than 25% of their cumulative area may be obscured by vehicle equipment as determined in a rear orthogonal view,” may exist. The safety risk is the back of the truck-tractor may be less visible when operating without a trailer in the dark.

To address these concerns, MACK will update trucks to comply with U.S. and Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 108, by applying new reflectors to the rear window. Follow the procedure outlined in this document.

 

VEHICLES AFFECTED

Certain Mack AN and PI model vehicles manufactured from January 04, 2018 to January 26, 2018.

 

VEHICLE QUANTITY

There are 52 (43 U.S. and 9 Canada) vehicles affected by this recall.

NOTE

The following three vehicles require Type 3 Reflector placement. 1M1AN3GY8LM005334 1M1AN4GY3LM011483 1M1AN4GY8LM012628 All others listed for this recall require Type 2, see Reflector Placement Instructions.

 

REQUIRED PARTS

• 21734285, Reflector (2)

NOTE

Reflector placement is dependent on truck build options. Please reference truck specifications, or review truck for proper reflector type, before ordering.

 

Decommissioning the Truck for Inspection or Repair:

1. Secure the vehicle for service by parking on a flat and level surface, place the transmission in neutral, apply the parking brake, turn the ignition key to the OFF position, and chock the front wheels.
2. Disconnect the cable from the battery’s negative (ground) terminal.

 

REFLECTOR PLACEMENT INSTRUCTIONS

NOTE

You must read and understand the precautions and guidelines in Service Information, group 80, “General Safety Practices, Cab” before performing this procedure. If you are not properly trained and certified in this procedure, ask your supervisor for training before you perform it.

1. Locate the correct installation sites for the new reflectors.
2. Clean the reflector mounting surface. The surface must be clean and dry before the application of reflectors. Isopropyl alcohol or similar may be used to ensure surface cleanliness.
3. Remove the liner from the reflector.

CAUTION

To prevent adhesive damage to the reflector, avoid contact with the adhesive.

 

4. Place one end of the reflector against the rubber window seal (horizontal), as shown. Press lightly while holding the rest of the reflector away from the vehicle’s surface.

5. Press the reflector onto the surface, applying consistent pressure across its entire length. Begin at one end and finish at the opposite end.

NOTE

For the reflector (part number 21734285) Starting at the contact point, smooth reflector towards the other end, removing air bubbles as it adheres to the  mounting surface.

 

COMMISSIONING THE TRUCK FOR OPERATION:

1. Connect the battery cable to the negative (ground) terminal.
2. Remove the wheel chocks.

Dealer’s Responsibility:

The National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act and Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Act requires dealers to ensure that all new and used vehicles are free of safety defects and comply with all relevant safety standards at the time of delivery to the consumer.

Dealers should make their personnel aware of the safety recall. In the event that a dealer has a vehicle included in the safety recall in their inventory to be sold, the condition must be corrected before releasing it to a customer.

 

Release Schedule:

• Vehicle list will be posted on the Trucks Dealer Portal March 28, 2019.
• Owner notification letters will be released on or before May 17, 2019.

DEAR MACK TRUCK OWNER:

 

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

Mack Trucks, Inc. has decided that certain AN model vehicles manufactured from January 4, 2019 to January 26, 2019 may fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108, “Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment.”.

SAFETY DEFECT:	The white conspicuity reflectors on the rear of the cab could be blocked by the exhaust pipes. As such, these vehicles do not conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, “Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment.”
SAFETY RISK:	A blocked reflector makes the truck-tractor less visible when operating the vehicle without a trailer in the dark, increasing the risk of a crash.
PRECAUTIONS YOU CAN TAKE:	There are no precautions you can take other than having your vehicle inspected and repaired if needed by a Mack Parts and Service Center.
TIME REQUIRED FOR THE REPAIR:	The time required to repair your vehicle is approximately one hour.
WHAT YOU SHOULD DO:	You should contact the nearest Mack Parts and Service Center and make an appointment. Any needed reflectors will be installed at no charge to you. NOTICE REGARDING LEASED VEHICLES:	If you are a Lessor of vehicles subject to this Notice, you have an obligation under Federal Law to provide a copy of this Notice to all Lessees within 10 days of your receipt of this Notice.  Further, you must maintain a record, which identifies the Lessee(s) to whom you send a copy of this letter, the date you send this letter, and the Vehicle Identification Number(s) of the vehicle(s) that you have leased to that lessee.  For purposes of this Notice, the term Lessor means: a person or entity that is the owner, as reflected on the vehicle’s title, of any five or more leased vehicles (as defined in CFR Section 577.4), as of the date of notification by the manufacturer of the existence of a safety-related defect or non-compliance with a Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard in one or more of the leased motor vehicles.
