SUBJECT:
Inspection / Correction of Battery Hold-Down Straps and Strap Mounting Hardware
KEYWORDS:
Battery, hold down, straps
ISSUE DATE:
May 2019
The purpose of this Recall Service Bulletin is to inform all REV Recreation Group dealers about the need to inspect the auxiliary battery compartment for improperly oriented battery hold down straps and/or possible contact between the battery terminal(s) and the metal battery hold down strap hook or hold down bracket(s). If either of these conditions are discovered, the dealer will need to reorient the battery hold down straps and hold down brackets to the locations as described in this publication. A list of the affected motorhomes appears at the end of this Bulletin.
CONDITION:
On motorhomes affected by this recall, the auxiliary batteries, located inside the entry step compartment, were installed with hold-down straps attached with mounting brackets; both the straps and the mounting brackets have metal components and were mounted in a manner that could allow the batteries to make contact between the battery terminals and the hold-down straps and/or their mounting brackets.
If the metal on the battery hold-down strap or the metal hold-down strap mounting bracket contacts the battery terminal, erratic electrical issues, smoke, or fi re could result, posing the risk of property damage, personal injury or death.
INSTRUCTIONS:
| Dealers are required to call REV Technical Support before beginning any work and after the unit is in their bay. Prior authorization is required to be submitted. Failure to follow these instructions could result in a denied claim.

INSPECTION:
- Park the motor home on a paved, level surface. Place the transmission into PARK and engage the parking brake. Retract the entry step.

- Block wheels to prevent movement.
| WARNING |
BEFORE BEGINNING INSPECTION:
|
- With the entry step retracted and auxiliary battery disconnect off, open the entry door. Access the auxiliary battery compartment by removing the (2) screws from the cover on the lower step with a wide, fl at blade screwdriver. Set the screws aside for later reinstallation.
- Inspect the battery compartment area for the battery hold down strap orientation. Refer to Figure 1 for a terminology key, and to the photos in Figures 2-4 on Page 3 as examples of both battery hold down strap scenarios.
- If the battery hold down straps are oriented from the front of the coach towards the rear of the coach, take several clear photos of the battery compartment area and reinstall the lower step cover. Submit a claim with 6079-11, for Inspected/Not-Defective.
- If the batteries have hold down straps oriented towards the exterior of the coach, proceed to Step #6 to continue the inspection.
- Inspect the batteries, wiring and mounting hardware for any signs of arcing or damage. If no damage is found, please proceed to Step #7.
PHOTO REQUIREMENTS
- If no damage is found, take clear photos of the batteries, terminals and wiring and submit to REV Dealer Technical Support when submitting for authorization.
- If batteries, wiring or mounting hardware show any signs of arcing or damage, take clear photos and contact REV Dealer Technical Support for repair approval and instructions on how to proceed.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
Note: The batteries do not have to be removed in order to complete repairs; however, cover the battery terminals prior to beginning work to prevent accidental contact.
- Locate and release the buckle on both battery hold down straps. Carefully unhook the straps from their mounting brackets and remove them from the battery compartment area. Set the straps aside for later reinstallation.
- Referencing Figure 5, use a 5/16” hex head driver bit to remove the battery hold-down strap mounting brackets and attachment screws. There are (2) brackets mounted on the interior vertical surface of the compartment and (2) brackets mounted on the bottom surface of the compartment. Set aside all of the brackets and screws for later reinstallation.
- Referencing Figures 6-9, begin reinstallation of the battery strap mounting brackets using the components previously removed in Step #8. You will need a 12” extension and a 5/16” hex head bit to reinstall the mounting brackets.
a. Slide both batteries all the way to the front of the compartment and install Bracket “1” on the bottom surface of the compartment at the location shown on the diagram in Figure 6. Reference also the photo in Figure 7.
b. Slide both batteries towards to the rear of the compartment until they are up against Bracket “1” and install Bracket “4” on the bottom surface of the compartment at the location shown on the diagram in Figure 6. Reference also the photo in Figure 8.
c. Leaving the rear battery against Bracket “1”, slide the front battery forward until it is against Bracket “4”.
d. With the batteries separated, install Bracket “2” and Bracket “3“ on the bottom surface of the compartment at the location shown on the diagram in Figure 6. Reference also the photo in Figure 9.
- Using the original battery hold down straps removed in Step #7, follow the instructions below to ensure there is no contact between the battery hold down straps and the battery post(s). Refer to Figure 10 for strap component descriptions and to Figure 11 for a photo of a completed repair.
a. Remove and set aside the male portion of the buckle from the longer section of both straps.
b. Starting with the rear battery, feed the longer section of one strap through both battery lift hooks for the rear battery, making sure that the metal hook on the battery strap is near Bracket “1”. Attach the metal hook of the mounting strap to Bracket “1”.
c. Reinstall the male portion of the buckle onto the strap and connect it to the female portion of the buckle, leaving adequate slack in the strap for connection of the components. Attach the metal hook to Bracket “2”.
d. Pull the adjustable portion of the strap tight so that the rear battery is held securely in place.
e. Moving to the front battery, feed the longer section of strap through both battery lift hooks for the front battery, making sure that the metal hook on the battery strap is near Bracket “4”. Attach the metal hook of the mounting strap to Bracket “4”.
f. Reinstall the male portion of the buckle onto the strap and connect it to the female portion of the buckle, leaving adequate slack in the strap for connection of the components. Attach the metal hook to Bracket “3”.
g. Pull the adjustable portion of the strap tight so that the front battery is held securely in place.
