Summary

Heartland Recreational Vehicles, LLC (Heartland) is recalling certain 2017 Bighorn Traveler, 2016-2020 Elkridge, Elkridge Ex, 2019-2020 Milestone, 2017-2018 North Peak, 2016-2017 Oakmont, 2017-2020 Pioneer FW, 2016-2018 Prowler FW, 2017-2019 Sundance and Sundance XLTFW trailers. The A/C electrical connector may have been improperly installed, possibly causing increased electrical resistance and the connection to overheat.

 

Remedy

Heartland will notify owners, and dealers will correct the electrical connections, free of charge. The recall began on September 5, 2019. Owners may contact Heartland customer service at 1-877-262-8032. Heartland’s number for this recall is 99.01.47.

RECALL SERVICE BULLETIN

A/C wiring connectors

 

Description 

The electrical connections for the air conditioning units may not have been properly assembled. The electrical connector may not be crimped to specification.

 

Inspection & Repair

 

1. Make sure the unit is not plugged in & the generator (if equipped) is shut off.

 

2. Press tabs on A/C filter cover and pull gently to remove.

 

3. Remove the two screws that are holding the electrical box in place.

 

4. Lower the electrical box down so that all four screws on the electrical box are exposed.

 

5. Remove all four screws holding the electrical cover in place and then remove the cover.

 

6. Pull the wires out of the box and separate them so that each connection is clearly visible. Remove electrical tape from each connection.

 

7. Cut and remove the old wire connections (clear bell caps) and/or orange wire nuts depending on which connection was used in the electrical box.

 

8. If bell connectors were used, strip the wires back ½”- ¾” and twist wires together with wire strippers. If orange wire nuts were used, once removed install the yellow wire nuts.

 

9. Once all the old connections have been replaced with the proper yellow wire nuts, wrap the individual connections in electrical tape.

 

10. Once each connection is wrapped individually in electrical tape, wrap all three connections together with an additional piece of electrical tape.

 

11. Place the connections back inside of the electrical box and reinstall the electrical cover on the box.
12. Reinstall the box inside of the A/C securing it with the two screws shown in the earlier diagram.
13. Reinstall the A/C filter and cover.
14. Plug the unit in and test to ensure the A/C is functioning properly.

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Heartland RV (Heartland) has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain Heartland travel trailers. We apologize  for any inconvenience this action may cause you, however your safety and continued satisfaction are of the utmost importance to us.

Reason for this recall	On certain fifth wheel trailers the electrical connection for the air conditioning units may not be done properly. The electrical connector may not be crimped as specified. This could allow resistance and heat to build up in  the connection and cause a failure which could result in property damage, personal injury, and/or death.
What we will do	Heartland will have an authorized dealer or repair center replace the bell cap connectors with yellow wire nuts  and wrap them in electrical tape. This repair should take no longer than 2 hours to complete. This defect will be corrected at no expense to you, the owner.
What we need you to do	At your earliest convenience, Please contact your local dealer to set up an appointment to have this inspected and if needed corrected immediately, this service will be performed free of charge. You will need the following information for the phone call: VIN of your travel trailer Name, Address, and Phone Number

Instructions for the repair and a list of the affected coaches with their VIN can be found on the warranty portal 99.01.47. Please verify your stock for any of the affected coaches and if you have questions concerning this recall or if you need any assistance please contact the Warranty/Service Department by email at ‘[email protected]’, or by phone at 877-262-8032.

Please have the VIN #’s of the affected travel trailers available when you call.

Federal regulations require that any vehicle lessor receiving this recall notice must forward a copy of this notice to the lessee within ten days.

Note: It is a violation of federal law (CFR 49 Part 573.11&12) for a dealer to deliver a new vehicle that has been sold prior to completing this recall. Please be sure to address any vehicles in your inventory that are affected by this recall action.
