ABS Magnetic Sensor Ring May Wear Prematurely

Without ABS, controlling the scooter in an emergency stopping scenario may be affected, increasing risk of a crash.

Summary

KYMCO USA (KYMCO) is recalling certain 2018-2019 Like 150i scooters. Excessive grease applied to the ABS sensor magnetic ring may cause the deterioration of the magnetic ring, resulting in ABS failure.

 

Remedy

KYMCO will notify owners, and dealers will clean the speed sensor sleeve and replace the magnetic ring in the speed sensor, free of charge. The recall began July 22, 2020. Owners may contact KYMCO customer service at 1-888-235-3417. KYMCO’s recall number for this recall is Like150-2020-Recall.

Recall Repair Instruction

 

Defect Involved:

Kwang Yang Motor Co., Ltd. (KYMCO) is voluntarily recalling all 2018 model year and select 2019 model year “Like 150i” units. These units have a magnetic ring in the front speed sensor that may deteriorate prematurely causing ABS dysfunction and the ABS light on the Speedometer to illuminate.

 

Reimbursement for Recall:

KYMCO USA will provide the recall repair kit free of charge and compensate each dealerships posted shop rate for 0.5 hours of labor based on the flat rate for each repair performed.

How to file claims:

1 Login to the KYMCO E Claims system

2 Select claim type “Tech Bulletin/Recall”

3 Enter in Main Problem PART: Like150i-Recall-Kit

4 Enter failure code:  D04

5 Labor time required: 30 minutes or 0.5 hours.

 

Before Repair:

Confirm that the unit is within the recall VIN range. For vehicles outside of the VIN recall range, recall reimbursement is not applicable. VIN Range of affected units:

• 2018 VIN Range: LC2DBJ140JC100101-LC2DBJ147JC100936
• 2019 VIN Range: LC2DBJ149KC100101-LC2DBJ14XKC101050

 

Tools Needed:

14MM SOCKET

19MM SOCKET

3/8 OR ½ DRIVE RATCHET

DISPOSABLE TOWEL

 

The repair kit will include one single item – Magnetic ring per vehicle

Like150i-Recall-Kit – Magnetic Ring

 

Instructions

Step 1:

Remove the axle screw to drop front wheel. Separate ABS cover from sensor ring. (14mm bolt head and 19mm nut)

 

Step 2:

Clean the excessive grease in the ABS sensor cover, leaving only a small amount of grease in the dust seal for lubrication.

 

Step 3:

Remove the damaged speed sensor magnetic ring. Install the new magnetic ring from the recall kit. Screw-on the sensor snug-tight by hand.

 

Step 4:

Reassemble the front wheel, pay attention to the front wheel speed sensor, the front shock mount is inserted into the U-shaped slot at the white dot mark and/or the R engraved in card.

 

Clearing ABS light

USE THE KYMCO DIAGNOSTIC TOOL TO CLEAR THE OBD.

 

Step 1:

Once back on the first page, press the right (down) button to scroll down to DTC inspection. Press the ENTER button on the DTC Inspect to move to next screen.

 

Step 2:

Select DTC Clear and press ENTER to clear ABS Code.

 

After the repair, test drive the vehicle and insure proper operation of ABS. The vehicle must reach a speed of 6 mph during the test drive. After test drive is complete, confirm that the ABS light is not illuminated on the dash.

What is the reason for this notice? 

Kwang Yang Motor Co., Ltd. (KYMCO) has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists on all 2018 and select 2019 model year “Like 150i” vehicles. These vehicles have a magnetic ring in the speed sensor that may deteriorate prematurely causing ABS failure and the ABS light on the speedometer to illuminate.  Without ABS, controlling the scooter in an emergency stopping scenario may be affected, increasing the risk of a crash.

 

What your Dealer will do. 

Your KYMCO Dealer will repair your vehicle free of charge for parts and labor. The service repair issue is limited to the front brake operation and does not affect the rear brake. Repair will include the replacement of the magnetic ring. The replacement of this component will take up to half an (0.5) hour.

 

What you should do. 

• You should stop using your Like 150 immediately, except to transport it to the dealership for repair.
• You must schedule an appointment with an authorized KYMCO dealer to have your vehicle repaired. We recommend transporting your Like 150 to the dealership for the service update.
• If you choose to drive your Like 150 to the dealership for the service update, please note that the ABS system may fail and affect your front brake system. Under no circumstance should the maximum speed exceed 30 mph while operating the vehicle.

Description of Defect: 

The defect is due to premature deterioration of a magnetic ring in the speed sensor caused by excessive lubricating grease.

 

Plan of Action: 

KYMCO USA, Inc. will send the repair kits to all authorized KYMCO dealers based on the number of affected units purchased to ensure that each dealer has an adequate quantity of kits on hand to perform the recall procedure in a timely manner. Additional repair kits are available upon request by the dealer.

 

KYMCO USA, Inc. will send letters to all registered owners (based off warranty registration with KYMCO USA, Inc.) of the affected units advising them of this voluntary recall and instructing them to make appointments for the repair of their vehicle at any authorized KYMCO dealer as soon as possible.  Please schedule the repairs for the owners as soon as possible to prevent any risk as a result of this defect. We have included with this letter a list of customers who have been registered with KYMCO USA, Inc. sold by your dealership in our warranty system with affected Like 150i units.  Please advise KYMCO USA, Inc. if there are any outstanding customers who have not been warranty registered so we can contact them immediately.

 

The repair kit (Part number: Like150-2020-Recall-Kit) contains the following items:

• Replacement magnetic ring
• Repair Instructions
• Warranty/Reimbursement Instructions

 

Reimbursement for Recall: 

KYMCO USA, Inc. will provide the recall repair kits free of charge and pay preestablished KYMCO dealer labor rates for each repair performed. Kwang Yang Motor Co., Ltd. has assigned a flat rate code for this recall:

• Flat rate code: Like150-2020-Recall-Kit
• Flat rate time allocated: half an (0.5) hour
