Summary
Arcimoto Inc (Arcimoto) is recalling certain 2020-2022 Deliverator, 2019-2022 FUV, 2021-2022 Rapid Responder, and 2020-2022 Roadster motorcycles. The brake pressure switch may corrode after exposure to salt and chemicals found in de-icers, causing the brake lights to illuminate constantly.
Remedy
Owners will be notified by mail and instructed to contact Arcimoto to schedule a service appointment to have the brake pressure switch inspected and dielectric grease added to the connection to prevent the brake lights from remaining on. Owner notification letters were mailed on May 27, 2022. Owners may contact Arcimoto customer service at 1-541-683-6293.
Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.
Please be reminded of the following requirements:
You are required to submit a draft owner notification letter to this office no less than five days prior to mailing it to the customers. Also, copies of all notices, bulletins, dealer notifications, and other communications that relate to this recall, including a copy of the final owner notification letter and any subsequent owner follow-up notification letter(s), are required to be submitted to this office no later than 5 days after they are originally sent (if they are sent to more than one manufacturer, distributor, dealer, or purchaser/owner).
Please be reminded that under 49 U.S.C. § 30112(a)(3), it is illegal for a manufacturer, to sell, offer for sale, import, or introduce or deliver into interstate commerce, a motor vehicle or item of motor vehicle equipment that contains a safety defect once the manufacturer has notified NHTSA about that safety defect. This prohibition does not apply once the motor vehicle or motor vehicle equipment has been remedied according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
As stated in Part 573.7, submission of the first of eight consecutive quarterly status reports is required within one month after the close of the calendar quarter in which notification to purchasers occurs. Therefore, the first quarterly report will be due on, or before, 30 days after the close of the calendar quarter.
Chronology :
On 11/5/21 a field report was made regarding the rear brake lights intermittingly remaining in an on state.
There were additional reports, stating the same issue. There were two (2) reports on 11/23/21, 12/26/21 (second time, same vehicle), 1/26/22 and 2/23/22. On 2/10/22 the details of the field reports were reported to the Quality and Regulatory departments and a problem communication meeting was conducted on 2/17/22.
It was agreed upon at that time that a shipping hold would be requested until a root cause and remedy could be determined. The research found that there was a corrosion problem in the brake pressure sensor switch caused by salt water and other contaminates such as deicers.
On 3/23/22 the temporary solution was to apply
dielectric grease to the connection to prevent the corrosion and the brake lights from remaining on. However this did not fully fix the problem. As over time the dielectric grease would wash away from exposure to the elements and the problem would reappear. It was determined that a more robust solution was needed to prevent another reappearance of the problem. After doing some more experimenting and research it was determined on 4/25/22 that adding a shrink wrap protection to the connection along with the dielectric grease would eliminate the problem.

FMVSS 1 : 122 – Motorcycle brake systems FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : Brake lights are an important part of the brake warning system. If the brake lights are not functioning properly there is no way for other vehicles on the road to know if your vehicle is coming to a stop or not. When this system is not working properly it increases the risk of the vehicle being involved in a crash. Description of the Cause : The brake pressure switch lacked enough dielectric grease in the connectors. This allowed salt water and winter de-icers the ability to saturate the connectors. This caused a disruption in the connectors that allowed the rear brake lights to remain open in certain cases which caused the brake lights themselves to remain on. Performance Systems Address : 5800 W Donges Bay Rd Mequon Wisconsin 53092 Country : United States Chronology : Beginning on January 26, the Service dept noticed an increased pattern with FUV and how the rear brake lights Part 573 Safety Recall Report 22V-175 Page 4 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 would remain on regardless if the brake pedal was engaged or not. On February 10th the details of the discovered defect were reported to the quality and Regulatory dept. The defect was not only a non-compliance issue affecting the brake system, but there was also an increased safety risk, due to the confusion this would cause to other drivers following Arcimoto vehicles. If the brake lights always remain on, this could result in a crash. A problem communication meeting was called on February 17th with members of the Arcimoto Service, Eng, Quality and the Reg teams. The group met to discuss the seriousness of the reported defect. After the meeting a hold was recommended to Arcimoto’s Exec team to prevent any further production of vehicles until a remedy could be implemented. The Service, Quality and the Engineering teams began investigating the defect and proposed that perhaps it involved the brake pressure sensor. There had been reports in the past of the connection for the brake pressure sensor becoming corroded and dielectric grease was recommended to eliminate the problem from the corrosion. The investigation continued for several weeks as members of the Quality and the Service team attempting to replicate the defect. On March 3rd, there was a development in the investigation and the Quality team was able to replicate the problem by using a 3 to 5 percent salt water spray on the connector of the brake pressure sensor. This was able to be successfully replicated on other vehicles in the fleet. This did not explain the population of vehicles that were not exposed to saltwater or air conditions. After checking with the Oregon Department of Transportations it was confirmed that the chemicals in the deicer would also cause the same interruption in the brake pressure sensor switches connection. On March 17 after more testing the root cause was confirmed Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : Owners will be notified by mail and instructed to contact Arcimoto to schedule a service appointment to have the brake pressure switch inspected and have the dielectric grease added to the connection to prevent the brake lights from remaining on. This results in the brake lights remaining in a constant on state. FMVSS 1 : 122 – Motorcycle brake systems FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : Brake lights are an important part of the brake warning system. The brake lights are devices that allow drivers that are following behind another vehicle enough warning to come to a stop if the vehicle that they are following is slowing down or preparing to come to a complete stop Description of the Cause : The brake pressure switch lacked dielectric grease in the connectors. This allowed salt water and winter de-icers the ability to saturate the connectors. This caused a disruption in the connectors that allowed the rear brake lights to remain open in certain cases which caused the brake lights themselves to remain on.
