End: 2023 Make: Western Star Model: 4900 Production Dates: Begin: 02/28/2022 End: 03/08/2022 Type: Truck Descriptive Information: On a limited production run of WST 4900 vehicles built within the above manufacturing date range at a DTNA manufacturing plant, equipped with a certain chassis frame mounted inversion valve, a supply shortage led to use of a replacement valve. On vehicles with the replacement valve, production operators at the manufacturing facility may have been interchanging the brake airline that connects the control port with the one that connects the balance port. Number potentially involved: 13 Estimated percentage of involve with defect: 100% Basis for Determination of the Recall Population: vehicles known to have received the replacement valve. Defect / Noncompliance Description For this Defect/Noncompliance: Describe the defect or noncompliance: Swapped airlines at the inversion valve, which if coupled with failure points in the primary air circuit, may potentially result in reduced brake effectiveness. If a noncompliance, provide the applicable FMVSS: N/A Describe the safety risk: Reduced brake effectiveness may lead to a vehicle crash. Identify any warning, which can precede or occur: In certain cases, related to air leaks, an auditory warning and a dash telltale will alert the driver about loss of brake air pressure and diminished brake effectiveness. If applicable, identify the manufacture of the defective or noncompliant component: N/A Involved Components Component Name: Inversion Valve Plumbing Component Description: Pneumatic Valve Plumbing Component Part Number: Plumbing to BW 103081 Chronology of Defect / Noncompliance Determination Provide the chronology of events leading up to the defect decision or test data for the noncompliance decision. On March 17, 2022, DTNA compliance was notified by the manufacturing facility regarding the inversion valve plumbing quality spill within a contained population. On March 23, 2022, as soon as DTNA had sufficient information from its investigation, and out of abundance of caution, DTNA decided to conduct a voluntary safety recall on certain WST 4900 vehicles built within the above mentioned manufacturing date range, equipped with a certain chassis frame mounted inversion valve. Identify the Remedy Describe the defect/noncompliance remedy program, including the manufacturer’s plan for reimbursement. Airlines connected to inversion valve will be inspected and repaired accordingly. Repairs will be performed by Daimler Truck North America authorized service facilities. Details of the reimbursement plan will be included in the owner’s notification letter.
